The latest British Football Comic Podcast show highlights a new unofficial book about football comic star Roy of the Rovers from Ian Golden.

Ian is the director of Sporting Records Online, a Wales, UK-based company providing sporting data and websites to a variety of clubs. They also provide copy and write match reports for leading trade and local newspapers and magazines.
The unofficial book offers a guide to the Roy of the Rovers comic published between 1976 and 1993 which, at its peak, was among the most popular children’s publications on the market.

Ian’s starting block was football comics, and he is a regular contributor to the British Football Comic Podcast, focused on strips and characters such as Roy of The Rovers, “Billy’s Boots”, Hot-Shot Hamish, “We Are United”, Football Picture Story Monthly and many more. The podcast regularly offers exclusive interviews with former editors and creators, including, recently, artist Barrie Mitchell on the occasion of his recent exhibition on the Isle of Wight, and Striker creator Pete Nash.
Episode 128 also brings news of an exclusive special anniversary event in September in Cambridge with Tiger and Roy of the Rovers editor Barrie Tomlinson and ROTR artist David Sque, commemorating 50 years since the launch of the Roy of The Rovers comic. Tickets will go on sale soon.

Plus: Paul “Tangent” Richardson gives us the latest news from the “We Are United” story; and Matt Richards delivers Part 4 of the “Blackie Gray Story”, continuing his guide to Melchester’s often under appreciated midfielder.
“We’re now into the 1970s and be prepared as he and Roy go on a summer holiday to Spain. What could possibly go wrong?” asks Matt.

“Mervyn Wallace is one of the legendary Melchester Rovers players,” he also notes. “Listen (or watch) as we re-tell his football comic life in the latest episode of our ‘Champ/We Are United’ football comic podcast. How did he join Rovers? What were his key storylines? Was he Welsh? Did he ever wear a green suit?
“We also mention the recent football related Commando, and we do another ‘Collectors corner’ as we talk about our recent purchases.”
