Ghost In The Shell is a seminal cyberpunk media franchise created by Masamune Shirow in 1989, set in the mid-21st-century and centred on cyborg federal agent Motoko Kusanagi, as she navigates philosophical questions of identity, consciousness, and humanity in a highly digitised future. The franchise has since transcended media boundaries, expanding into mediums like anime, a live-action Hollywood film and video games.

The manga ran until 1991 and inspired multiple anime adaptations including the 1995 film of the same name (which is currently not being widely licensed), the 2002 television series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: Arise.

Now it is back, with a brand-new animated TV series version of the iconic sci-fi series. Motoko Kusanagi, also known as Major, returns again battling more cybercrime.

Made by the acclaimed animation studio Science Saru (Inu-oh, The Colors Within, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Dan Da Dan), the fresh animé arrives in Japan as a TV series launching in July 2026 as a Prime Video exclusive, with other territories to follow.

“Reemsborko continues to sign the most interesting IP out there,” Max Arguile of Reemsborko commented. “Kodansha have some of the most beloved animé properties ever created. This project is the best of both worlds – a highly revered and classic IP with an established fanbase, but with fresh content coming.”

Founded in 1909, and headquartered in Bunkyō, Tokyo, Kodansha is a privately owned publishing and music publisher and is now the largest publisher in Japan. Other key holdings include iconic franchises such as Attack on Titan, Akira, Sailor Moon, and Fairy Tail.

Reemsborko is the licensing agency repping the good stuff, from animé and animé-adjacent properties, to comics, films, TV and tattoo art. You might not know it, but you need it…
