Minions #2

Something for the Weekend (8th July 2015) – Boov, Minions, Bacchus and Dirk Gently, too!

Bacchus Omnibus Edition Graphic Novel

Here’s this week’s list of comics on sale in British comics shops, plus some news stand titles – our intent, as ever being to skew our coverage in favour of British creators.

Out this week is an IDW/Top Shelf release that’s sure to earn the attention of many – a stonking omnibus collection Eddie Campbell‘s Bacchus. A true epic, spanning a decade of work, over a thousand pages, and several millennia of alcohol consumption, in which Eddie presents his version of “an American-style comic book,” filtered through his own brilliant, whimsical, and wide-ranging sensibility.

With a fine blend of action, comedy, suspense, and an ear for a great story, Bacchus brings the gods and myths of ancient Greece to modern life, as if they had never left. Nearly 600 pages, this deluxe volume collects the first half of the saga (including Immortality Isn’t Forever, The Gods of Business, Doing the Islands with Bacchus, The Eyeball Kid: One Man Show and Earth, Water, Air & Fire) with new notes and commentary by the author.

Also out this week is the first Titan Comics based on the Home animated film, based on the quirky novel by Adam Rex, The True Meaning of Smek Day. This project had an interesting development, but Max Davison has delivered a great script for the lead story and Matt Hebb‘s artwork is absolutely gorgeous – well worth taking a look if you’re a fan of the film (or book). (Both Max and Matt are at SDCC this weekend, by the way) The next issue features the work of ace British artist Steve Beckett, so watch out for that, too!

Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

Grievous Journey Of Ichabod Azrael #5

Grievous Journey Of Ichabod Azrael #5
Writer: Rob Williams Aritst: Dom Reardon, Antonio Fuso Cover Aritst: Dom Reardon

This epic tale of vengeance shakes the very gates of death itself. Ichabod, the deadliest, meanest son-of-a-gun the Old West ever spat out is back in the afterlife, ripped for all time from his beloved. But who, exactly, is behind his murder, and what is this strange land beyond death that he finds himself in? And can he kill his way through the afterlife in order to once again return to the living?

The King in Yellow - Cover

The King in Yellow
Writer: Robert W. Chambers, I.N.J. Culbard (A/CA) I. N. J. Culbard

The supernatural stories that make up Robert W. Chambers’s classic piece of weird fiction are tied together by a play that brings madness to all who read it: The King in Yellow. It’s a book that draws readers in with an irresistible yet innocent opening act, then drives them insane with the poisonous words of Act 2. An influence on writers from H. P. Lovecraft to Neil Gaiman, The King in Yellow is one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. In this dangerously unputdownable graphic-novel adaptation, I. N. J. Culbard brings to life a thrilling tale of horror that will make readers laugh and cry and tremble with fright.

Twisted tales master David Hine returns to the grueling world of Garth Ennis’ survival horror Crossed with a story from the early days of the outbreak. When a Japanese mobster’s daughter is trapped at a cosplay convention on C-Day, the criminals learn the hard way that in a Crossed world it doesn’t matter how tough you are…just how fast you run. And Justin Jordan locks us in our nightmares with a visceral tale that takes us to Federal Prison. Jesse Bullock is not a good man, but a very hard man. Down for armed robbery and assault, the only crimes they were able to prove, he has but one good quality: he loves his cousin Otis. When they end up imprisoned at the same jail, Jesse intentionally gets himself denied parole to make sure he’s there to protect Otis, who isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But that job gets much harder when the Crossed spread inside those escape-proof walls! This volume collects issues #71 – 74 of the ongoing Crossed: Badlands series and the Crossed Special 2014.
