Something For The Weekend… Doctor Who? James Bond? Johnny Red? Comics On Sale 4th November 2015 leave you spoilt for choice!

Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor #1 Variant by Mariano Laclaustra

Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor #1 Variant by Mariano Laclaustra

Well, aren’t we spoilt for choice this week when it comes to titles from British creators with new work this week? Will you be a Doctor Who, James Bond or Johnny Red advocate – or hedge your bets and buy the lot? Or just go for something else entirely, like another great issue of 2000AD (“Bad Company” continues to thrill!) or the latest issue of Miracleman from Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham?

See? So many options! And that’s just scratching the surface….

Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor #1Who Sop Variant by Emma Vieceli and Hi-Fi

Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor #1Who Sop Variant by Emma Vieceli and Hi-Fi

Well, let me suggest at the very least a peek at the new Eighth Doctor mini series from Titan Comics, penned by George Mann with art from Emma Vieceli, coloured by Hi-Fi, lettered by Comicraft. This is a bright, breezy opener introducing a cheery Eighth Doctor on a mission, who finds painter Josephine Day ensconced in his house (yes, this Doctor has a house in a pleasant English village – well, pleasant apart from the monsters menacing it, that is). With some smashing art and great gags acknowledging artist Emma’s art style (Animae particles!), it’s a smashing opener for this new mini series. There are a huge variety of variant covers to choose from, too. (This “spoilt for choice” theme is rampant this week, isn’t it?)

Dom Reardon's cover for James Bond #1

Dom Reardon’s cover for James Bond #1

Then there’s James Bond #1 from Warren Ellis, with art from Jason Masters, published by Dynamite Entertainment – a gritty, no nonsense tale that I think will please fans of the original, early novels. Stirring stuff.

(If you don’t know what I did there, then James Bond isn’t for you).

Of course, the book I was really looking forward to was the first issue of the eight-issue Johnny Red mini series and I’m not disappointed, even if the book’s hero isn’t revealed in person until late on. Garth Ennis offers fans a modern day investigation into a World War Two mystery about a recently-discovered, badly shot up Hurricane, while artist Keith Burns delivers some cracking aerial warfare in the skies of wartime Russia.

While it might seem a slow start to an action series, Garth introduces the title’s lead with an appreciated level of detail and an air of mystery, gives us some interesting modern-day characters to engage with, while, art-wise, the book is a delight. Things will get full on as this series develops and I’m looking forward to the rest of the story. Recommended!

As usual, don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic , which celebrates its 200th Issue this week, the first independent weekly comic (not counting DC Thomson or IPC/Fleetway titles) to reach such a landmark since TV21 way back in November 1969. It’s now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

• You may also be already thinking about Christmas, so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are available in all good bookshops at a steady pace right now.

Miracleman Artifact Edition Hard Cover

Miracleman Artifact Edition Hard Cover
Artist: Garry Leach & Various Cover Artist: John Totleben

Re-invented by Alan Moore, Miracleman was launched 30 years ago in the now legendary Warrior magazine. It turned the concept of “super-hero” on its ear with big ideas that helped redefine an entire genre… when Miracleman fought Kid Miracleman on the streets of London… well, things would never be the same.

And then there was the art.

Miracleman had a true knack for bringing out the best work from extraordinary artists. Starting with co-creator Garry Leach, followed by Alan Davis (and others) and finishing with one of the most amazing endings in comics history by the phenomenal John Totleben, Miracleman was a work of art painted on a grand canvas, unlike anything before or since.

Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Rafa Ortiz Cover Artist: Fernando Heinz

Kieron Gillen (Uber, Wicked & Devine) takes the horrors of the Crossed back to the ancient past where 75,000 years ago humanity came as close as it has ever come to being purged from the Earth. There were as few as 2000 humans remaining. This is historical fact. Why it came to this is generally blamed on super-volcano Toba causing a minor ice-age. But that’s not the full story. That is not the history of the Homo Tortor, i.e. Man The Torturer. This empire before the beginning of time, that sends raiding parties gathering other Homo species and enormous mega-fauna, invented cruelty, refined domination, and perfected killing. And they think their power will last forever. There is no help, there is no hope. There is only the Crossed. This volume collects issues #75 – 80 of the ongoing Crossed: Badlands series. Available in paperback and hardcover editions.

Writer: Sean Michael Wilson (A/CA) Michiru Morikawa

Over one hundred years ago, the writer Lafcadio Hearn gathered and translated into English a selection of traditional Japanese ghost/mystery stories. They were published as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. In this new graphic novel, acclaimed manga creator Sean Michael Wilson retells six of these stories. All of them are very well known in Japan, where ghosts and demons are often called yokai, meaning “the mysterious and weird.” Today these stories find expression mostly in movies and manga, but they remain rooted in the traditional ghost stories of the Edo-era known as kaidan, which means “recited narrative of strange, mysterious, rare, or bewitching apparitions.”
