The special Commando Issue 5000 cover by veteran artist Ian Kennedy and a Batman-inspired Beano cover by Nigel Parkinson are among others shortlisted for this year’s PPA Scotland’s Cover of the Year Award.
The DC Thomson comic titles join magazines such as Big Issue and Biologist on the short list this year, all offering eye-catching covers that have done their job and caught the eye of the judges (and, hopefully, prospective readers).
The Commando 5000 cover was chosen because it “encapsulates the traditional tone of Britain’s longest running war comic, depicting a British Commando bravely running into action with a steely look of determination.”
DC Thomson say choosing a Commando to feature as cover star was a natural choice for this landmark issue, harking back to the brand’s conception. The issue combined the talents of some of Commando’s greatest creators, and legendary British comics talent, Ian Kennedy, created the artwork.
Ian has drawn more than 1,200 Commando covers, beginning his career with the comic in the 1970s and of course, the cover is almost entirely hand-drawn.
The shortlisted Beano by Nigel Parkinson reflects the lives of its readers, but a larger than life slice of that life. “The LEGO Batman Movie was sure to be the biggest thing in our readers’ lives in February,” say DC Thomson. “It was a no-brainer to add a cheeky, mischievous Beano spin… and so Batmin was born!
“It delivers a clever piece of wordplay and a dynamic piece of art – the exact Beano sweet spot!”
