Here’s Darick Robertson’s fantastic Kickstarter Print for Killtopia, which will go out to all £12+ backers in October. Even if you didn’t back the comic, which secured over £16,000 in funding support, you can pre-order the first issue here on BHP Comics.

“This one is a big deal for me, as Transmetropolitan by Darick and Warren Ellis was the series that got me into comics,” says Killtopia writer Dave Cook of the print, which was coloured by Tony Aviña (who’s published how he did that on Twitter). “So it’s seriously mind blowing that he took our commission to create this wonderful piece for you guys – especially since my initial brief was ‘Do the couch intro from Friends, but in Sector K’.”

Killtopia, by Dave Cook and Craig Paton, is a comic series set in a futuristic, neon-scorched Japanese metropolis. In this version of the world, the city is overrun by an infestation of killer Mechs – hulking robots that are slowly terraforming the city into a hostile jungle environment,

Corporations, governments and criminals pay bounty hunters called Wreckers to enter the hub of the infestation – a zone called Killtopia – to slay the Mechs and retrieve their precious high tech scrap in exchange for money, fame and glory.

The comic series focuses on Shinji, a rookie Wrecker with crap weaponry who hunts Mechs to pay for his dying sister’s medical care. One day he meets the world’s first thinking, feeling sentient Mech – a robot called Crash.

Quickly, both Shinji and Crash are wanted fugitives, on the run from Yakuza gangs, robotic Kaiju monsters, android samurai and a range of Wreckers with larger than life personalities.

They find themselves thrust into a deadly conspiracy that threatens to end the world. Can they escape capture long enough to save the planet and our species from total extinction?

Following a juggernaut Kickstarter campaign by author Dave Cook and artist Craig Paton, Scottish publisher BHP Comics signed up the neon-drenched cyberpunk graphic novel series with its wicked streak of dark humour and hyper-violence, and lavish artwork inspired by the legendary Geoff Darrow and Moebius.

Smashing its Kickstarter goal by over 400 per cent the campaign offered backers bonus art pieces by Darick Robertson, Caspar Wijngaard (Limbo/ Angelic), Tom Foster (2000AD) and Gary Erskine (Marvel, IDW, Image, DC),

Killtopa #1 is a killer signing to BHP’s growing roster of top indie talent.

Dave Cook is a writer hailing from Scotland. He’s spent the best part of a decade as an award-winning games journalist before setting up his comics label Card Shark Comics. He is the creator of Dark Souls inspired fantasy saga Vessels and post-apocalyptic road trip series Bust.

Craig Paton  is a comics artist and professional illustrator working on video games and movies. His work for commercial clients, like Edinburgh Gin, Holland & Sherry and BBC Scotland.

“What excited me most about joining BHP Comics is that, as well as allowing us to get our work out to a much bigger audience, it’s very cool to be part of something promoting Scottish art and talent to the wider world,” says Craig.

“We couldn’t be more excited to join the BHP family for many reasons; one of those being that they are a fellow Scottish outfit,” says Dave. “It means a lot to us that we can take our first step as published creators and help fly the flag for Scotland’s ever-expanding comic industry.”

Killtopia captures the today’s resurging appetite for genre based sci-fi books and it immediately caught our attention,” says Sha Nazir, publisher at BHP Comics. ” This is the first time BHP have acquired a book funded by Kickstarter and we are really pleased to add to the book’s success by increasing its visibility through the book industry, and are excited to bring this new world to our readers in September.”

You can find out when Killtopia #1 arrives in October, but will also be available direct from BHP at Thought Bubble. Pre-order your copy here
