A Special Limited Time Offer for downthetubes Asterix fans!

We’ve got a very special, limited time offer for Asterix fans here at downthetubes, thanks to ace print maker John Patrick Reynolds, who runs the Comic-Art site.

Asterix Print by John Patrick Reynolds

After offering prints based on the world famous Asterix strip for a very happy 12 years on my website, the property is leaving the Comic Art crew. John’s licence to print and sell his handpulled Asterix screenprints ends at the end of June – in just two days time.

John is offering downthetubes readers 33% off on the remaining Asterix prints with this discount code: Asterix33Tubes

(Trade customers can also get in on the bargains – and are also being offered 33% off – and should contact me directly at jpr@thecomicartwebsite.com)

Based in London, John Patrick Reynolds was the first screenprinter to get permission from DC Thomson, to use images from its archive of British comic characters from The Beano’s Dennis the Menace, The Bash Street Kids and Minnie the Minx to The Dandy’s Desperate Dan and the Sunday Post’s Oor Wullie and The Broons.

All John’s prints are limited editions, and all are numbered in pencil. He’s also the only screenprinter in the UK to have worked with French publisher Editions Albert Réné to make screenprints of its characters Asterix, Obelix, Getafix and, of course, Dogmatix.

Asterix and Obelix – originally written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo – have now appeared in more than 40 books (selling more than 380 million, compared to a total of 270 for Tintin).

“Asterix and I are roughly the same age,” says John. “Asterix The Gaul – the first book featuring small-but-shrewd Asterix and his large-but-slow chum Obelix – appeared in 1961, as did I.

“So, in a sense, we grew up together.

“My mother was happy about this because of the culture I was absorbing by associating with him: languages and (dodgy) history.

“To say nothing of the brilliant translations by Anthea Bell (older sister of the war-reporter-in-the-white-suit Martin Bell).
