The work of author and illustrator Bryn Barnard, “Concrete” creator Paul Chadwick, partner Elizabeth Moon Chadwick and Daniel Finn, presented together for the first time in one location, form a new group exhibition “Age Against the Machine”.
The exhibition is described as “multifaceted meditation on our lives in the Salish Sea”, running at the San Juan Community Theatre on San Juan Islands in Washington State, until 30th November 2025.
The artists are all long-time residents of the islands. Finn, Chadwick and Moon Chadwick live on San Juan Island; Barnard lives on Lopez.
Their work, comprising drawings, paintings and prints, reflect their accumulated experience there: the habitat, the flora and fauna, the seasons, the climate, the ferries.
The author and illustrator of five books of science-history for kids, Bryn Barnard has lived in the San Juans, on and off, since 1995.
A comics artist and writer, whose credits include the award-winning series Concrete, about a thoughtful man stuck in a brutish, rock-coated body, and other stories, and former movie storyboard artist, Paul Chadwick has lived on San Juan since 1994. His pieces in this show are drawings from life, mostly recognisable island scenes.
“I’ve been doing art in one way or another for as long as I can remember,” Elizabeth Moon Chadwick says of her work. “At the age of 23, when traveling alone in Scotland, I vowed, ‘I’m going to be an artist if it takes me until I’m 90.’ I’m officially a senior citizen now, and still plugging away at it.”
Daniel Finn is a professional house painter who has painted 321 houses on San Juan Island. He has also been a chef, a gardener, a teacher and a performing monk … er … musician. He began studying the art of picture painting in college and never got over it.
“If you are open to it, a painting can lift up your awareness and encourage an expansion of thought and feeling,” he’s said previously. “It offers a chance to meet what is hidden in yourself – that suchness which knows but doesn’t grasp – the original state, the state of your true nature. That’s pretty lofty work for such humble elements as pigment, rags and water. At any rate, a painting represents an opportunity to be fully present in the now, which many people are coming to realise is an important place to spend some time.”
San Juan Community Theatre is the cultural heart of beautiful San Juan Island, Washington. Located in the historic and picturesque town of Friday Harbor, the Theatre is a state-of-the-art facility offering a wide variety of performances, events and educational opportunities year-round
