This year’s Bradford Literature Festival includes the launch of a dedicated comics and manga weekend at the University of Bradford over the weekend of 1st – 2nd July.
BLF Comic Con will combine the customary convention set up with unique and specially curated events, to create a comics extravaganza, exploring traditions from around the world as well as manga, graphic novels, science fiction and gaming.
An ‘Artists Alley’, where visitors will have a chance to meet the authors, artists and comic creators behind some of the most innovative and exciting comics around is also planned, from the well known and best loved, to the up-and-coming.
The event will also play host to a spectacular market place, where fans can browse the latest merchandise and must-have collectables.
The Literature Festival itself includes events such as a performance of Wonder Heroes in Bradford’s City Park (several performances), while at The Force is With Us and JAKe, illustrator extraordinaire and the artist behind How to Speak Droid with R2-D2, and Tom Huddleston, author of Star Wars fiction including the Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space series, we will explore the galaxy, from Coruscant to Tatooine. On Sunday, lecturers and Wonder Woman experts Joan Ormrod and Michael Goodrum host Wonder Woman: From Amazon Warrior to UN Ambassador, discussing Wonder Woman’s origins and cultural significance from past to present; and and Hannah Berry and Tom Huddleston will present Post-Truth Satire in Comics & Graphic Novels, explaining why comics and graphic novels might be among the most effective platforms for satire, and examine the central role they can play in negotiating our post-truth world.
