Here’s this week’s list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops tomorrow, Wednesday 14th January 2015. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of, including cover artists.
If you didn’t back the Knockabout collection of Hunt Emerson‘s glorious Calculus Cat collection on Kickstarter, then you may not yet have a copy of this fabulous book – but fear not, it’s now available in all good comic shops, right next to the box of Skweeky Weets! This terrific tome, re-presenting a huge range of brilliant strips, includes a a gallery of Calculus drawings from 40 other cartoonists beside the illustrious Hunt himself, including Dave McKean, Gilbert Shelton, John McCrea, Kevin O’Neill, Kate Charlesworth and Rian Hughes.
Two titles scheduled for release last week from Titan Comics, go on sale tomorrow – Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #6 featuring the Weeping Angels – the first TV Monster to appear in their range – and the ace-looking Dragon Riders of Berk: The Ice Castle, written by Simon Furman.
Oh, and the other title out this week you may not have heard about at all? Star Wars #1, featuring art by John Cassaday. We hear it’s got a few orders… as, we expect, will Marvel’s Secret Service: Kingsman collection from Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, a release tying in with the soon-to-be-released film.
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano and Commando, with great strips featuring in titles such as Judge Dredd Megazine, Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, TOXIC, VIZ and many more.

His world is graphic, black and white, jagged, full in, weird, speedy and loud – everything a comic should be!
Out of print for donkey’s years, Calculus Cat is at last re-published with twenty or so new pages, and a gallery of Calculus drawings from 40 other cartoonists including Dave McKean, Gilbert Shelton, John McCrea, Kevin O’Neill, Kate Charlesworth and Rian Hughes.

The Crossed universe is an unyielding nightmare vision of animal depravity and homicidal insanity. Simon Spurrier takes you to a picturesque environment in the English countryside with tweeting birds, friendly vicars, crumpets and jam, and a mob of Crossed lurking near the duck pond. No one sees Wheezy the fat asthmatic kid hiding up in the old tower but if he shows his face it will only be the farmer’s wife between him and a bloody fate. The problem is, she’s Crossed too. And newly-Crossed Justin Jordan tells his first diabolical tale as two women attempt to escape the band of monsters out for their blood. When a mysterious unseen Samaritan helps them escape to a sanctuary it seems as though they’ve found what little safety there is in the new world order. Considering Watchmen Soft Cover (Rutgers University Press)
Writer: Andrew Hoberek
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s Watchmen has been widely hailed as a landmark in the development of the graphic novel. Considering Watchmen gives readers a new appreciation of just how radical Moore and Gibbons’s blend of gritty realism and formal experimentation was back in 1986. The book also considers Watchmen’s place in the history of the comics industry, as well as how it has had profound effects on literature as a whole. Andrew Hoberek examines how Moore and Gibbons engaged with the emerging discourses of neoconservatism and neoliberal capitalism, ideologies that have only become more prominent in subsequent years.
