British Library Superhero Challenge for Kids

British Library Superhero Challenge for Kids (2021)

This autumn, the British Library are asking children to create their own comics starring heroes of all sorts – whether they have the power to fly, save forests or make someone smile.

If adults share their work tagging @BL_Learning before 30th November, they are in with a chance to win book tokens!

Check out this page on the British Library web site, where there are masses of ideas for creating comics for kids (of all ages!) – and you can also download a free comic by illustrator Salvatore Rubbino, telling the tale of superheroes ‘Top Cat’ and ‘Top Dog’. Following years of jealous rivalry, they finally discover that joining forces is the best way to bring an evil mouse to justice!

Plus, author and illustrator Sarah Garland maps out the comic layout for her story, “Azzi In Between”, using different viewpoints and box sizes to present the story from Azzi’s perspective.

Fleeing a war-torn country, Azzi and her family are forced to seek refuge in a new land. Azzi must leave her grandmother and adjust to a different home and strange language.

Plenty of other artists work is included for inspiration, too. It’s a fantastic resource if you want to encourage drawing, comic creation, and flights of the imagination… and if you visit the page, you’ll soon realise I mean that literally!
