The wonderful Caption comic event is back after a two year hiatus, as an evening event on 1st December in Brighton, celebration the 25th anniversary of this much-loved comic creator gathering.
Caption is the UK’s longest running comics festival, showcasing the work of small press and professional creators alike. Established in 1992, Caption has previously occupied various homes in Oxford, but has moved to Brighton this year.
On Friday 1st December, as part of Graphic Brighton, there’ll be a panel discussion of music and comics with DJ Food and cartoonist The Surreal McCoy, a ‘Pecha Kucha’ series of presentations, including a discussion of Misty and classic girls’ comics by comic creators who include Hannah Berry, Jaime Huxtable, Daniel Locke, Michi Mathias, Myfanwy Nixon and Simon Russell, and the Caption small press table selling comics by local creators.
This special event starts at 6.00pm at Phoenix Brighton, 10-14 Waterloo Place, Brighton BN2 9NB. It’s free, but a £2 donation would be welcome.
The evening’s line-up is as follows….
6.00pm – Doors open
6.30pm – Introduction to Caption – Alex Fitch and Jenni Scott
6.45pm – ‘Music and Comics’ panel discussion with The Surreal McCoy and DJ Food
7.30pm – ‘Pecha Kucha’ presentations by Rachel Ball, Tom Cleary, Ottilie Hainsworth, Jaime Huxtable, Daniel Locke, Michi Mathias and Myfanwy Tristram
8.30pm – ‘Misty and the legacy of classic girls comics’ panel discussion with Hannah Berry, Hannah Eaton and Jenni Scott

A number of related events have also been lined up. On Friday at 7.45pm there will be a Private View for ‘Art of Snub 23’, featuring a DJ set by DJ Food at the Bozboz Gallery, 30 Richmond Place, BN2 9NA.
On Saturday 2nd December there will be two “Mapping Your Own World” events at the Phoenix Brighton, with two creative sessions for all the family with Phoenix artists including Ottilie Hainsworth at 11.00 am – 1.00 pm and 2.00 – 4.00 pm. A free drop-in. they’re an opportunity to enjoy exploring and making together. (Children 3 – 14 years old must be accompanied by a parent or carer).
The “Maps & Lives Exhibition Celebration Day” runs from 2.00 – 8.00pm in the gallery and at Phoenix Community Centre, offering a ‘Rear View’ instead of a ‘private view’ and a last chance to contribute artwork to a community project.
The Rose Tinted Spectacular Zine Fair @ Rose Hill Tavern, taking place from 3.00pm – 11pm at The Rose Hill Tavern, Rose Hill Terrace, London Road, Brighton BN1 4JL offer the opportunity to meet artists and buy ‘zines and comics by local creators.

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
