Yorkshire-based Una explains it’s story of two halves, based on her limited edition 2008 zine Family Fun: On Sanity – this new work is a sequel.
“Part one of the new book tells the story of my own experience supporting my mother on the day she was ‘sectioned’ under the mental health act,” she explains.
“Part two tells the story of my mother’s experience of the same day, while she was ill with psychosis, and some insights into her recovery, which has been as graceful as it has been heart warming.”
As part of the project, there will be eight comics and zines workshops, starting this week, in collaboration with Arts and Minds (Leeds) and East Street Arts (Leeds), for people who want to explore graphic narratives as a way of communicating the experience of mental ill-health and recovery.
Creators also involved include Jean McEwan and Darryl Cunningham.
Workshops are free and open to anyone over the age of 16. There will be drawing, writing, zine making (of course!).
Participants will receive a free signed copy of the book On Sanity: One Day in Two Lives, which has been published with support from Arts Council England. The finished publication will also be donated to libraries in the Leeds area and will be on sale on Una’s website from mid July, as well as from independent comics stores.
Una is an artist, academic and comics creator. Her self-published graphic narratives have explored disability, psychosis, political activism and violence against women and girls.
Becoming Unbecoming, her first graphic novel, was published by Myriad in September 2015 – a devastating personal account of gender violence, set against the backdrop of the 1970s Yorkshire Ripper man-hunt.
Una was shortlisted for the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize recognising women who work against male violence.
