Recently released as a collection from Image Comics is Gospel by Will Morris, a fantastic-looking adventure with a cover by Ver, who also provided covers from the mini-series.
When opportunity refuses to knock for restless hero Matilde, the devil comes knocking instead. Inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki and set in the chaos of King Henry VIII’s reign, Gospel is a thrilling fantasy adventure that questions the truth behind the stories we tell.
Thrust into action by a hellish arrival, Matilde and storyteller Pitt will quest for answers, answers that threaten to tear them apart and trigger the toughest question of all: “who am I?”
Will Morris is a freelance comic creator and illustrator. Along with his Gospel, published by Image Comics, his work also includes The Silver Darlings, published by Blank Slate Books, for which he won a British Comic Award. Both narratives explore themes of faith and expectation through the lens of historical events.
His process blends traditional and digital drawing techniques, with a focus on communicating expressive gestures and rich environments.
Will, a lecturer on the BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art course at Leeds Arts University, has also produced comics for a range of clients including Oxford University Press, Nobrow, Spirou, 2000AD, Vertigo, the Edinburgh International Book Festival and V&A Dundee.
Before joining Leeds Arts University, he taught on the BA (Hons) Illustration course at Edinburgh College of Art.
“As a reader, I love the magic of movement and storytelling the creators conjure,” Will told David Baillie earlier this year, discussing his work and the comics form.
“I love the diversity of stories that are being told and how I’m constantly surprised by the creator’s ambitions. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade, Persepolis by Marjan Satrapi, Hellboy by Mike Mignola, This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki are just a handful of the stories that have redefined my expectations over the years.
“As a creator, I love to admire the craft. Especially, attempting to decode how artists create such vivid moments with their lines and shapes.”
