Cloaked in secrecy during its production, Disney’s Tomorrowland arrives in UK cinemas on 22nd May 2015 – and from the trailers so far, it looks absolutely stunning.
From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world — and them — forever.
Featuring a screenplay by Lost writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof and Bird (the director of The Incredibles) and Jeff Jensen, Tomorrowland promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.
While there has been little information on the film released, Variety reported this week that Bird, Clooney and screenwriter Damon Lindelof appeared in a short behind-the-scenes feature during the exhibition industry conference CinemaCon, revealing the film was inspired by Walt Disney’s utopian vision for how technology and science could transform and improve lives. Epcot Center and the theme park’s futurist underpinnings was a guiding force on the film.
“[Disney] was interested in the future and what it could be,” said Clooney.
Walt Disney himself features in another promotion for the film, re-imagined as a member of a fictional secret society that planned to build a city of the future: Tomorrowland. As the film’s cast works to uncover Tomorrowland’s secrets, hidden throughout Disney’s theme parks, they discover just how expansive Walt Disney’s imagination was.
The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson.
Tomorrowland is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Brigham Taylor, Jeff Jensen and Bernard Bellew serving as executive producers.
