Want something distinctly weird on your wall, bed or floor? Philadelphia based Beehive Books and comic creator Charles Burns have just the thing – a “Creepy Crawlers” Illuminated Tapestry!
Philadelphia based Beehive Books, a small press founded by the artist and designer Maëlle Doliveux and the author, editor and publisher Josh O’Neill, is currently running a “pop up” Kickstarter to produce a limited edition “Illuminated Tapestry”, a woven blanket featuring new original work by the one and only Charles Burns… and it seems there are plenty of people who want a deeply weird rug on their floor, because the campaign, which ends very soon, has smashed its target.
Charles Burns (Black Hole, Last Look) is celebrated for his comics and illustration work, with a career dating back forty years. From RAW Magazine to Iggy Pop album covers to MTV Liquid Television cartoons, his work has visited itself upon the the material world in many vibrant forms.
“And yet, here in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty three, he has somehow not yet created new work designed to be woven onto a soft-touch organic cotton blanket,” note Beehive.
“That ends right now. We present to you: ‘Creepy Crawlers’ by Charles Burns. An image designed specifically to be loom-woven at massive 60″ x 80″ scale into a stunning tapestry-style textile.
“This troubling, beautiful piece is available right now in a two-week popup campaign. We’re fast-tracking fulfillment on this one, in order to get you this blanket and all our others before the holidays. We plan to fulfill this campaign completely by the beginning of December. Create a portal to a stranger, more vivid world beneath your Christmas tree.”
This Charles Burns Tapestry joins a collection that already features blankets blankets are woven entirely out of natural cotton yarn by Lisa Hanawalt, Yuko Shimizu, Jim Woodring, Lorenzo Mattotti and Michael DeForge. They’re all set to ship before Christmas, within the United States and internationally, although be aware international shipping may take longer and might be costly.
Beehive already produces book art editions of distinctive literary and pictorial works with singular design sensibilities, the highest production values, and a special emphasis on comics and graphic art.
Their entire series of Illuminated Tapestries is available for sale, individually or as heavily discounted collection sets. (One complete set can knock out half of your holiday gift list in one fell swoop.) A seven-piece collection of stunning textiles by visionary cartoonists, illustrators, designers and makers.
