The latest comic from Moom Comics, currently seeking backing on Kickstarter, tells the story of two women who fell in love in the most unexpected place – a cult.

“In Between the Trees is a queer graphic story that immerses the reader in the psychologically complex world of a cult, explored through the perspective of Mathilde, a journalist investigating the group,” Moom Comics founder Łukasz Majcher explains. “Set in the picturesque yet isolated Corbières region in southern France, Mathilde becomes fascinated by the community and falls in love with one of its members, Anita.
“The story delves into themes of identity, love, freedom, and the dynamics of manipulation and control. Will Mathilde choose to stay for love, or will she leave the group?”
The comic explores the mechanisms of psychological manipulation, which not only affect spiritual communities but also modern forms of social pressure. It’s a story about self-discovery, courage, and the fight for authenticity, which can inspire many people.

In Between Trees writer Paul Winck conducted extensive research while creating this story, speaking with people who have experienced life in a spiritual community, demonstrating empathy and sensitivity towards their experiences.
“This is not just fiction,” says Łukasz. “It’s a study of the human psyche and relationships in extreme conditions.”
“At first, [Mathilde] fascinated is by [the community’s] way of life, but she quickly starts to notice the harsh rules and hierarchy that make her doubt her place there.
Things get even more complicated when she falls in love with Anita, the ashram’s cook. Will Mathilde stay for love, or will she trust her instincts and leave?
“In Between the Trees is a story of psychological turmoil, difficult choices, and the lengths we are willing to go for the ones we love.”
If the crowdfunder is a success, In Between the Trees is expected to be published in May 2025 and will run to over 72 pages, printed in full colour on offset paper, and initially published in two languages, German and English, allowing it to reach a broader audience.
