Dark & Golden Books releases new Chris Reynolds collection

Dark & Golden Books - 2 x Chris Reynolds (2024)

Dark & Golden Books have just released 2 x Chris Reynolds, a new collection of two stories by the much-missed, groundbreaking comic creator that have been unfairly out of print since their original publication.

In “Space Food”, from 1990, sci-fi and the kitchen sink collide in a typically uneasy fashion, while in 2005’s “The Animals’ War”, time travel proves to be less of a blessing than first thought, and the landscapes are littered with dark warnings.

The comic also features new introductions to each story and a vintage interview with Reynolds from 1989, as well as a timeline of the creators’ collections.

Chris Reynolds is, perhaps, best known as the creator of Mauretania Comics, and was once described by Canadian comic creator Seth as “the most underrated cartoonist of the last 20 years.” Sadly, he died last year, aged just 62.

Chris was born in Wales in 1960 and studied fine art at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic. He worked as a filmmaker, publicist and art teacher, but turned to drawing and self publishing comics, creating and producing his Mauretania Comics from the mid-1980s, often sold through the Fast Fiction stand at the Westminster Comic Marts, started by Paul Gravett and Peter Stanbury, later run by comic creators such as Phil Elliott and Ed Pinsent.

Later in Chris’s career, his work became more widely recognised, and he was a guest at numerous comics events, both in the UK and internationally, including Canada’s Toronto Comic Art Festival, and a full-length graphic novel was published by Penguin Books in 1990. An anthology of his works, The New World, was also published, to critical acclaim, in 2018.

Edited by Tom Oldham and Douglas Noble, and designed by Douglas Noble, 2 x Chris Reynolds is the latest release from Dark & Golden Books, an independent publisher dedicated to charting a less travelled course through the history of British comics.

The team are dedicated to finding and celebrating mislaid and forgotten classics for the audience of today in new high-quality editions. Recent releases include 2 x Brett Ewins and Peter Milligan and the never-before-collected Shuk and Doode by Simon Harrison.
