Easily reaching its target ahead of the closing date, an officially authorised Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 100 Year Art Chronology – project looks simply wonderful.
Funding will see the publication of a four-volume collection of illustrations from Burroughs’ US publications, spanning some 1200 pages, including art from UK-published titles.
Be warned though, the set isn’t cheap – Chenault & Gray Publishing, the publishing arm of Troll Lord Games say the massive retrospective of art from the books and stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs will set you back a cool $249.
The book will be written by longtime Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide advisor Michael Tierney, a lifelong Burroughs fan, and the collection will bring together more than 5000 images of pulp covers, interior art, and pieces from comic adaptations of Burroughs’ extensive bibliography, That includes work from Frank Frazetta, Joe Kubert, Paul F. Berdanier, J. Allen St. John, and many others.
Burroughs is best known as the creator of Tarzan, John Carter and Pellucidar. Also a war correspondent during World War Two, he wrote nearly 80 novels over the course of his career in several pulp genres, including fantasy, science fiction, and westerns.
Burroughs was one of the first artists to incorporate, which he did for tax reasons and for more control over his works. Burroughs’ books were published through the company from 1931 (Tarzan the Invincible) through 1948 (Llana of Gathol), with one additional title (I Am a Barbarian) appearing in 1967.
The company remains in the ownership of the Burroughs family and manages and licenses Burroughs’ works and characters, including Tarzan and John Carter of Mars.
