The Lakes International Comic Art Festival (17th-19th October) has announced that Emma Vieceli has joined Grandville and Luther Arkwright author Bryan Talbot, artist Sean Phillips and writer Mary Talbot as a patron of the annual event.
“We were thrilled when Emma accepted our invitation to become the festival’s fourth patron,” commented Festival Director Julie Tait. “Emma is recognised as being at the forefront of comic art in the UK and has an international reputation for the quality and range of her work, for breaking new ground and for her ability to enthuse and inspire others both fellow creators and audiences too.
“These elements mirror what the festival is all about and we couldn’t have thought of a more appropriate advisor and advocate for our work.”
Says Emma: “For a long time now I’ve been saying ‘comics are about everything, for everyone’ and honestly meaning it. I, like many of us, strive for an industry where genre is the only label we need, and where we achieve a strong unity between creators, whatever their angle of approach on the scene. The Lakes Festival, as well as being in a part of the world that means a lot to me and my extended family, is an event that is fostering that ideal.
“The variety of guests is as exciting and diverse as the comics they make and critique, and so – when I was asked whether I’d be interested in becoming a patron of the event, I quickly and excitedly said yes! I hope I live up to the honour.“
Avalon Chronicles
Emma’s work includes the New York Times, best selling, Vampire Academy graphic novel series for Penguin Random House, the Yalsa 2013 recommended, Avalon Chronicles for Oni Press and her creator-owned and Eagle Award-nominated Dragon Heir with Sweatdrop Studios.
BREAKS by Emma Vieceli and Malin Ryden
She’s currently working on the Alex Rider series for Walker books and her creator-owned BREAKS, with co-writer, Malin Ryden:

As well her work on comics, Emma has worked in both games and television, recently on the A&E television series, Bates Motel providing the sketchbook found by Norman Bates.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
