The latest Compal Comics auction is live, and if you’re a Disney fan, Girls Comics, First Issue Fanatic or enjoy the work of artists Frank Bellamy, Joe Colquhoun and Ron Turner, there’s plenty on offer that will appeal – including a very early “Judge Dredd” page by Ron.
This is definitely an auction that those interested in first issues should not miss, many later comics with their free gifts offered, too. There are one hundred first issues on offer, put together over a 40-year period by one ardent long-time collectors. In the last ComPal auction, 70 of them made over £1200.
Disney fans will be delighted to bid on a scarce collection of Mickey Mouse Weekly, offered over three lots. Launched by Willbank Publications and later continued by Odhams Press, this is a title that doesn’t get the attention it deserves, a comic crammed with top notch original stories by creators such as Wilfred Haughton, and the first Donald Duck comic book serial, originally called “Donald and Donna“, which began in issue 67 (cover dated 15th May 1937), drawn by William A. Ward; alongside reprint of American strips. As you can imagine, bidding on these weekly comics is already fierce, especially with Donald’s popularity in Europe.

Also in this auction are the first four Radio Fun comics, published in 1938, and complete runs of The Beano complete years for 1945 and 1946, and complete years of The Dandy for 1950 and 1958.
If it’s first issues you’re after, With Free Gifts, then this auction has them in spades – including 2000AD, The Hornet (with its hard to find Kestrel Glider), SMASH! Topper, girls comics such as Bunty, Judy, Marilyn, Marty, Mirabelle and Misty (and plenty of girls comics aplenty, some complete runs, such as 103 issues of 1970s weekly title Sally, plus its one Special and annual).
Here’s a slideshow of just some of the rare issues on offer, mostly first issues…

Eagle artwork is represented with an action page pitting Dan Dare against his deadly nemesis, The Mekon, painted and signed by the comic’s legendary co-creator, Frank Hampson; and a gorgeous “Heros the Spartan” double page spread by Frank Bellamy.

Art by the acclaimed Joe Colquhoun drawn for Lion is also up for grabs, and a number of his “Charley’s War” pages created for Battle-Action, too; as is Ron Turner’s 1980s re-creation of the front cover artwork for the SF novel, Moons For Sale, along with a copy of the original 1950s Scion Sci-Fi novel from which it comes, as featured in Telos Publishing’s recent release, The Fantastic Art of Ron Turner by John Lawrence. Plus, “Black Max” art for Thunder Annual 1973, by Eric Bradbury, too

But the treats on offer don’t end there (can you feel your wallet pulling you yet?), with TV Century 21 Nos 1-103 on offer as one lot, Lady Penelope No 1 with its Lady P Signet Ring, TV Tornado 1-88, WHAM! 1-187 complete run, with No 15’s free gift “Whampire Bat” and No 16’s “The Wacks” Pop Parade booklet.
