The lineup at the upcoming Comic Book Day at the Plaza Cinema in Waterloo, Liverpool on Saturday 25th March now features further guests, many of them former Marvel UK stalwarts alongside DC Comics, 2000AD and BEANO veterans.
As we previously reported, this will be a comic con in the old style with interviews, signings, Meet and Greets and Q & A’s, MC’d for the day by Roy Basnett from Liverpool Live 24/7 radio, with a guest list primarily devoted to comic creators – rather than event lazily labelled as such, with nothing but TV and film guests.
The Plaza Community Cinema is a unique, volunteer run community resource that offers dynamic film based education programmes to schools, the voluntary sector and the general public.
Since reopening as a community cinema in 1997, the three-screen Plaza has promoted a range of commercial, limited release, foreign language and cult film. More importantly, it has developed an innovative menu of community events designed to promote the social, educational and inspirational value of film. It is one of the few charities in the UK to provide essential community facilities and encourage social inclusion through a cinema.
Running from 10.00am until 5.00pm on Saturday 25th March 2023, the comic guests are Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead, The X-Files, Green Lantern, DC, Marvel); Alan Cowsill (Marvel Comics, Eaglemoss, Marvel/DC encyclopedias); Leigh Gallagher (2000AD, DC Comics); Marc Jackson (Aces Weekly, The77, The Phoenix); Nigel Parkinson (BEANO and more, including artist on “Dennis the Menace”); Jason Quinn (the award-winning The Beatles Graphic Novel, Panini Comics editor and writer); Tim Quinn and Dicky Howett (Doctor Who Magazine, Marvel Comics, New Haven Publishing); and Lew Stringer (BEANO, The Dandy, Buster, Doctor Who Magazine, creator of Combat Colin, Brickman)
Joining them will be children’s book illustrator and mural artist Holly Bushnell, and Candi Milo, one of the the busiest voice over artists in the animation world. Candi has worked for Disney, Spielberg, and the rest in an extraordinary career like no other. She also has a book out from New Haven Publishing with the apt title, Surviving the Odd, a dark comedic memoir.
A special non-comics guest is Colin Hanton, Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s original drummer with The Quarrymen. Colin will be signing copies of his book telling the tale of those extraordinary days, and be interviewed by Amy Maria of the Liverpool Echo and Jason Quinn.
Liverpool Heartbeat, the Merseyside children’s charity will be showcasing their line of comic books created by Marvel and DC artists.
