



Comic creators Kate Charlesworth and Mary Talbot are in Lancaster this week for a special free event, discussing feminism, queerness, political activism and the graphic novel.
Registration is not required for this free event organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University, open to all – just turn up!

Kate Charlesworth is a cartoonist and illustrator living and working in Scotland, although originally from Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
Kate’s cartoons first appeared in the gay press in the early 1970s. Subsequently, her work appeared across the media, including comics in The Guardian and New Scientist and, later, in comic anthologies and graphic novels.
With Bryan and Mary Talbot she co-authored Sally Heathcote – Suffragete (Cape 2014). Her acclaimed memoir/LGBTQ+ history of the UK, Sensible Footwear – a Girl’s Guide (Myriad, 2019) has been reissued in French as A Pink Story – Mon Manuel LGBTQI+ (Casterman, 2021) and in German as United Queerdom (Carlsen, 2023).
She is currently scripting a new graphic novel, and lives in Leith.

Art from Armed with Madness
Mary M. Talbot, recently back from the Angoulême Festival, is currently Visiting Professor of Graphic Narrative at Lancaster University, is an academic turned graphic novelist.
Her first graphic novel, Dotter of her Father’s Eyes (with Bryan Talbot), won the 2012 Costa Biography Award.
Her most recent publication is Armed with Madness: the Surreal Leonora Carrington (with Bryan Talbot 2023). Rain (2019, with Bryan Talbot), is a rallying cry to protect the planet. Her previous graphic novels are Sally Heathcote, Suffragette (2014, with Kate Charlesworth and Bryan Talbot) and The Red Virgin (2016, with Bryan Talbot). Her most recent academic book is Language and Gender (3rd ed, 2019).

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
