
The Embassy of Japan in London has launched its highly anticipated 17th Manga Jiman Competition.
You can find out this year’s theme, the prizes on offer and a radical change to the format by watching this launch video on the Embassy’s YouTube channel.
The Embassy of Japan has searched for the best comic creators in the UK since 2007. The search now continues with three competitions across two formats with the aim of providing a platform for aspiring comic artists.
The popular competition is open to diverse talents, and as usual it’s expected the entries will feature an array of categories and styles.
The Manga Jiman Competition
Comic creators across the UK are being challenged to create an original manga story within six, seven or eight pages for a chance to win superb prizes! This category is for artists aged 14 or over.

Yonkoma Youth
Yonkoma is a comic strip of four panels arranged vertically. The Yonkoma Youth category is for artists aged 11, 12 or 13 to create an original story within this format.

Yonkoma 14+

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
