The Make Mine Manga exhibition that has recently toured libraries across the North West, and opens at Barrow-in-Furness Central Library next week, is heading to Athens, to be part of the attractions at this year’s Comicdom CON Athens 2024 next month (17th – 19th May 2024).
The exhibition in Greece is a partnership between the Embassy of Japan in Greece, helping mark the Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism 2024, and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
With Comicdom CON Athens 2024 – Japan: Honoured Country – International Exhibition: Make Mine Manga, explore the history of Japanese manga, the creative techniques behind this unique art, and discover the wonder of Manga-Anime.
Sponsored by Nissan, the Make Mine Manga exhibition includes artwork from some of Japan’s most influential creators. It’s curated by Paul Gravett, the internationally renowned figure in the field of The Ninth Art, curator of comic exhibitions across the UK including the British Museum and the Barbican Centre, and author of many books about comics and their creators, including Manga: 60 Years Of Japanese Comics.
Paul will be at Comicdom CON Athens 2024, for a live guest tour of the fascinating history of manga.
Make Mine Manga is a free, touring exhibition for anyone curious about manga, as well as the avid fan, initially led by Bolton Library Services, on behalf of a consortium of libraries in the North West. The exhibition explores the origins of manga in Japan, the creative techniques behind the art and the wonder of manga and anime. The exhibition features artwork from incredible creators from Japan and UK manga creators.
It was funded by Arts Council England under its Project Grants scheme, and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival is one of the delivery partners.
“This partnership is a great example of international exhibition sharing,” says Lakes Festival director Julie Tait. “Our Make Mine Manga exhibition is flexible, modular and easy to reproduce, and open to translation, as it’s not text heavy.
“We’re delighted to be involved in this special project, with Paul’s support, and we hope this will be just the first international showing of Make Mine Manga.”
