Marvel will be part of the massive virtual Comic-Con@Home 2020 organised by San Diego Comic Convention, with several panels throughout the weekend taking place on 22nd – 26th July, 2020, live-streamed on Comic-Con’s YouTube page.
San Diego Comic Convention, the organisers behind the annual comics and pop culture convention Comic-Con, cancelled in 2020 because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, have previously shared details for Comic-Con@Home, an online event that will combine aspects of the convention experience with the comforts of home.
Circumstances involving the COVID-19 pandemic and California’s restrictions against large gatherings forced SDCC to cancel their 2020 international celebration that brings fans and professionals from all over the world to San Diego. Comic-Con@Home was first teased in early May with a short video announcement and a promise of details to come.
But although conditions prevent celebrating in person, the show, as they say, must go on. With Comic-Con@Home, live streamed on YouTube, SDCC hopes to deliver the best of the Comic-Con experience and a sense of its community to anyone with an internet connection and an interest in all aspects of pop culture.
Plans for Comic-Con@Home 2020 include an online Exhibit Hall complete with everyone’s favourite exhibitors offering promotions, specials, and limited-edition products unique to the celebration. It will feature over 350 separate panels spread out over all five days of the event, offering something for everyone!
Here’s how it works: once the daily schedules go live, you’ll be able to read the descriptions and decide what you’d like to see. Each panel will contain a link; when you click on that link, you’ll launch another page that has the panel video embedded on it … that video will be available on the date and time listed. When it’s available, simply push play and watch! It’s that simple.
(The majority of the panels will also be available after the 22nd – 26th July 2020 dates, although there are some that may have a limited time period attached to them).
All the panels will also be available on the Comic-Con YouTube channel, so you can also access them there. Subscribe on YouTube.com at https://www.youtube.com/user/ComicCon
Marvel kicks things off with Disney+/Marvel’s 616 on Thursday 23rd July at 1.00pm PT, an upcoming documentary series revealing the behind-the-scenes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This panel will explore the company’s stories, characters, and creators. Documentary directors Gillian Jacobs, Paul Scheer, and executive producers Sarah Amos and Jason Sterman will talk about the anthology series with moderator Angélique Roché.
The Marvel HQ panel will also be on Thursday 23rd July at 4.00pm PT. This one is focused on younger readers and giving them a look at what Marvel HQ has to offer with a comics read-along, Lego battle, and a behind the scenes look at Spider-Man: Maximum Venom.
The Next Big Thing panel will take place on Friday 24th July at 11.00am PT. Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski will discuss what’s happening with their comics. Tom Brevoort, Al Ewing and Dan Slott will talk about Empyre. Jordan White, Tini Howard and Gerry Duggan will discuss the X of Swords event. Nick Lowe, Nick Spencer and Mark Bagley will give the details on Amazing Spider-Man #850. Lowe will also discuss Werewolf by Night with creators Taboo and Ben Jackendoff.
Comic-Con@Home promises exclusive panels and presentations about comics, gaming, television, film, and a wide variety of topics from publishers, studios, and more.
As if that weren’t enough, Comic-Con@Home will also have a Masquerade, gaming, and many other activities in which fans can participate from their own homes.
Although Comic-Con@Home will provide badges for fans to print and wear proudly, all aspects of the initiative are free and there are no limits to how many can attend.
“For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe,” said SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer.
“Though stay-at-home conditions make this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community.”
Comic-Con@Home will be held on the same dates as the previously canceled Comic-Con, July 22-26, 2020, and online attendees are encouraged to use the official #ComicConAtHome hashtag to be included in the virtual activities. Interested fans are encouraged to check Toucan, the official Comic-Con and WonderCon blog, SDCC’s website and social channels, and the official channels of their favourite pop culture creators for more details.
This initiative joins the Comic-Con Museum’s virtual endeavour, Comic-Con Museum@Home, already ongoing.
