“Material Memoirs: Telling Tales through Things“, an event celebrating the recent launch of two new books which both use objects to narrate selves and lives takes place in Brighton on Wednesday 30th October 2024. One is the graphic novel, Undressed by Susan Sainsbury, published by Markosia last month.
Join Annebella Pollen, Professor of Visual and Material Culture at the University of Brighton, as she introduces the authors and brings them together in conversation.
Susan Sainsbury is a Brighton-based illustrator, seamstress and author of three graphic novels – Kitty, Cheery Cak, and now, Undressed – and a former graduate from the University of Brighton’s MA in Sequential Design.
Undressed is a series of linked illustrated stories from one woman’s life, highlighting how she expresses her ideas and personality through her clothes. It deals with the pressure to conform and the need the express ourselves as individuals through what we wear. The stories demonstrate how clothes can both mask and reveal our identities.
Suzanne Joinson is a Worthing-based author of two novels and is Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Chichester. The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things is Suzy’s memoir of growing up on a council estate in 1980s Crewe, where her parents were followers of The Divine Light Mission cult. This clash of class and counterculture destroyed her family, leaving a legacy of turmoil and poverty.
Years later, she attempts to piece what was lost. She acquires replicas of beloved objects that had to be destroyed in regular purges in the hope of restoring family ties.
