Meet Dinah Mo, the Dandy’s eco-warrior!

We previously highlighted the impending arrival of the Beano Summer Activity Special 2024 and The Dandy Summer Special in your local newsagents and supermarkets, both out on 15th May – and now we can report the debut of an all-new version of Dinah Mo in the new Dandy publication.

The new Dinah Mo is very different character to the original Dinah Mo, initially called “Dinah Mite” in her early strips in the 1970s, a boisterous girl who always landed in trouble. Today, Dinah Mo, aka Dinah Modose, is an inventive eco warrior who tries to put things right, created by the DC Thomson staff, who then assigned Lew Stringer to write and draw the stories.

“Obviously the key is to be entertaining rather than preachy about environmental issues so the usual Dandy fun will still be to the forefront!” Lew says, revealing his involvement on his own blog.

After the new Dinah Mo makes her debut in a two-page story in The Dandy Summer Special 2024, alongside some other new characters, too, she’ll also appear in four new stories in The Dandy Annual 2025, out on 12th August.

“I’m currently plotting three Dinah Mo stories for The Dandy Annual 2026, to be published in Autumn 2025!” Lew also teases.

The Dandy Summer Special is scheduled for release on 15th May, on the same day as Beano Summer Activity Special 2024. You can see a preview of page one of the first “Dinah Mo’ story over at the DC Thomson online shop, where you can also pre-order the upcoming special direct from the publisher.

When not writing and drawing new strips for The Dandy, Lew is also creating “Daft Dimension” for Doctor Who Magazine (the latest very funny indeed!), and “Sgt. Shouty” for The77. He recently released a digital collection of Tough Guy and Scruffy No.1, characters that first appeared in the 1990s – more detaisl on how to get a copy of that here.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
