More 2000AD and “Trigan Empire” original art offered in latest Book Palace auction

Book Palace are running another Comic Artworks Auction featuring a range of art from its vaults over on Catawiki, that includes 2000AD originals by Carlos Ezquerra and Ron Smith, Modesty Blaise, “Trigan Empire” and other strip pages – including a future war page by John Cooper for Battle Picture Weekly.

Curated by Filippo Piras, artists whose work features also include Jesus Blasco, Simon Coleby, Philip Corke and Gerry Wood.

2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine Art

Full colour action page by Chris Weston drawn in 1999 for an episode of 'Downlode Tales', a six episode feature which appeared in 2000ad. The story was written by Dan Abnett and features some absolutely brilliant characters, a whole lot of action, bullets, explosions and destruction! This page was published in prog (issue) 1158 in 1999. The page still has it's acetate cover with the hand written speech bubbles and narrative text pasted on, as well as a publisher's tracing paper attached to the acetate, showing colour notes.

This is a stunning page of Durham Red drawn and coloured by the fantastic Carlos Ezquerra, the artist who first drew Judge Dredd. This page is from the classic science fiction comic 2000ad, Prog 768 published 1st Feb 1992. In this page of 'Island of the Damned', Durham Red (known as The Strontium Bitch) has been taken to The Island of the Damned and is observing the goings on... she believes that she has gone to Hell itself.

This large full colour Rogue Trooper page was painted by Ron Smith and published in prog 715 of the British Comic 2000ad. Full of great panels featuring the hero and a trail of destruction! Rogue Trooper is a famous British comic strip created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons in 1981.

'Survivor' was a 6 episode story published in 2000ad Progs 639 to 644. The total 30 page story was written by Hilary Robinson, and drawn by the phenomenal artist Ron Smith. This large page is beautifully inked, has a stunning lay-out and was signed by the artist in 1995, however the artwork dates back to 1989. Ron Smith who sadly passed away in 2019, is a highly respected British illustrator and comics artist, who drew for hit series such as Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper and Red Dwarf, as well as many other stories. The reverse of the page has the official 2000ad rubber stamp showing this page was published on 9th September 1989, in Prog (issue) 643.

Very dramatic page for part 11 of ‘The Moses Incident’, this is the real dramatic climax of the story, where Johnny Alpha and Malak Brood engage in the final battle. The story was written by Alan Grant, lettered by Jack Potter and drawn by Carlos Ezquerra. This was published in Prog (issue) #345 of the Science Fiction comic 2000ad on 3rd December 1983. The comic, which is still being published today is still a hit, and collectors worldwide are beginning to take more note of these fantastic publications. In this very early page from the 2000ad series, Johnny Alpha is facing down Malak Brood in the final battle of the story.

A stunning page of Judge Dredd artwork by Manuel Benet- take a good look at the fantastic artwork, colours and layout. This has a huge splash panel showing a rogue robot judge decimating a target. The artwork is executed in watercolour, inks, pencil and black pen, on Dibujo Geler GVA RRO art paper. The acetate sheet with the speech bubbles is still attached to the artwork, which means it can be lifted to view the artwork in it's full glory, without the shine of the acetate plastic or speech bubbles. The reverse of the page is marked 'Meg #38 pg. 2' referring to the 2000ad Megazine, published 1993

Modesty Blaise

An original Modesty Blaise strip drawn and Signed by Neville Colvin in 1983 for an instalment of 'Death in Slow Motion', first published in the Evening Standard newspaper. Modesty Blaise has been a fan favourite action Newspaper Strip since Jim Holdaway drew the first strips for Peter O'Donnell's stories back in 1963! This is strip number 5671 of the classic series, and features Modesty in the first two panels alongside her right hand man Willie Garvin.

Trigan Empire

The first two pages of the Trigan Empire story 'The Zith Assassin', published in the British comic Look and Learn, issue 653, on 20th July 1974. The original art boards are painted in full colour and still have their speech bubbles and narrative text boxes pasted on. The artwork features great layout and a brilliant large panel- the science fiction has an awesome retro feel. The boards have been cut along their centres to be able to fold, so that the artist could send them to the publisher- they have been reinforced by the publisher with white tape.

Other Comic Strip Art and Illustration

This is the unique original Pen & Ink Wash by Eustaquio Segrelles illustrating The Origin of The Phantom! This is an exciting action filled page from The Phantom strip originally published in the 1971 Pow! Annual. Jim suddenly realises he has superhuman strength and he is surrounded by an eerie glow! Segrelles worked on many series including his most well known 'Los Imbatidos' (1963). He also drew episodes of other series, like 'Aquiles', 'La Cuadrilla' and 'Johnny Pacífico'. The artwork has been inked and coloured onto the Bristol board. There are some very feint pencil words in the margin written in Spanish- these may be notes from the artist or publisher.

This is the unique original Pen & Ink artwork by John Cooper, created for a brilliant and creepy story called 'The Plague of Spiders' which ran in the British comic 'Battle' The artwork is on a large thick art board and feature panels showing Aerial Assassin flying a bombing run for Web-Master Crab! This page was featured in Battle Weekly #631 published June 6th 1987. The page features an official IPC Magazines rubber stamp.

This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Nadir Quinto. One of a series of beautiful illustrations painted by Quinto for the British comic Playhour (1958-59) and later used in a children's book version of J. M. Barrie's famous story of Peter Pan published 1982. Playhour featured artwork from many international artists and was published in other countries under other names too.

This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Nadir Quinto. One of an enchanting series of colourful and romantic paintings used to illustrate the fairy story of Cinderella. Here, our Heroine steps out in her beautiful new dress with her Fairy Godmother to find her coach to take her to the ball. This was published in the British comic Playhour in 1956. A beautiful Fairy Tale painting.
