Portsmouth Comic Con – International Festival of Comics returns to the south coast on Saturday 2nd and and Sunday 3rd May, with top US comic creators David Michelinie and Stuart Moore and British comics artist Paul Fry just announced as joining an already-impressive guest list.
An impressive Artists Alley of guests, sponsored by Catawiki, will be complemented with incisive panels, exhibitions, displays, workshops, merch, cosplay and interactive fun in the form of VR, robots and gaming and more featuring a ‘Celebration of Female Superheroes’ (Saturday) and ‘A World of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ (Sunday).
Some of the biggest names in the industry have already been announced including Adam Hughes, Rick Leonardi, Troy Alders, Marguerite Sauvage, Janet K Lee, Roy Richardson, June Brigman, Katie Schenkel and The Etherington Brothers – and now even more fantastic names are added.
First up is writer and award-winning editor, Stuart Moore, whose recent comics include Bronze Age Boogie and Captain Ginger (AHOY Comics), Deadpool the Duck (Marvel), EGOs (Image) and an adaptation of the novel Batman: Nightwalker for DC Entertainment’s new young adult line. His novels include X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga (Marvel/Titan) and three volumes of The Zodiac Legacy (Disney Press), created and co-written by Stan Lee.
Stuart also consults on a freelance basis for AHOY Comics, where he holds the mysterious title of “Ops”. He lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, author Liz Sonneborn, and two of the most spoilt cats in the universe!
Next up is professional writer for over 45 years, David Michelinie, who has written more than 600 comic book stories in which he created several characters, including Venom, Carnage, and Taskmaster, which have been featured in major motion pictures.
His comics career has spanned genres from westerns to war, horror to superhero. In addition to his comic work, David has published two novels, has placed short stories in anthologies; Werewolves: Dead Moon Rising and periodicals; Spider-Man Magazine, is a published poet; Poetic Images: The Great American West and has written scripts for the Nicktoons animated TV series, Iron Man Armored Adventures. His comic book biography of Mother Teresa won the Catholic Book Award for Best Children’s Book and his recent prose effort; Lord Pemberton’s Adjustment Service, won the 2017 Pulp Factory Award for Best Short Story.
And also joining the line-up is Hampshire based illustrator, designer and comic book artist Paul Fry, who is best known for his Dex-Starr work in DC Comic’s 2019 anthology ‘Dog Days of Summer’. Paul has previously worked with Markosia Publishing and has been an illustrator for tabletop roleplaying games and provided illustrations and design concepts for the video games industry.
Paul’s next project is a DC Comics story featuring Green Arrow and Black Canary, inked by industry legend Mark Farmer and can be seen in the upcoming ‘Crimes of Passion’ book due for release 5th February 2020.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
