The latest issue of the “Half Decent Football Magazine” When Saturday Comes includes a feature on how artists turn their hands to football featuring Road to Perdition and Doctor Who artist Richard Piers Rayner and Marvel artist Will Sliney.
Born in Middlesbrough, Richard, who I commissioned to draw Doctor Who and covers for Marvel UK back in the 1990s and whose work for DC Comics includes Swamp Thing and Hellblazer, found international success as the artist on The Road to Perdition, which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster by Sam Mendes starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman and is the artist in residence at Middlesbrough Football Club. (He’s also been involved in other local Middlesbrough projects, contributing illustrations to a new book on the city’s iconic transporter bridge).

Marvel Comics artist and writer Will Sliney’s work first came to light for the majority of Evertonians when, after an invitation on Twitter from the club, he produced a set of stunning drawings for the Junior Blues 2013/14 Premier League home match programme versus Norwich City. The illustrations, featuring various Everton players and manager Roberto Martinez, became something of a Twitter sensation and propelled Will into the consciousness of the Twitter ‘Everton family.’
The article’s writer, Stephen Jewell, says he hopes it will appeal to both comics and football fans.
The issues covers a wide range of football news and looks back on many memorable moments in football and offers its usual blend of features and opinions on the Beautiful Game.
