Book Palace Books are working in partnership with Rebellion to publish a number of limited edition “Fleetway Picture Library Classics” comic collections, bringing strips such as “Jet Ace Logan” back into the limelight.
These collections are in addition to their ongoing Illustrators magazine, which will highlight work of artists such as 2000AD‘s John Michael Burns and others.
May sees release of the limited edition 268 page Fleetway Picture Library Classics presents Jet-Ace Logan, featuring the art of Ron Turner and Kurt Caesar. A limited edition of 500 copies, it will feature four complete 64 page stories starring Jet Ace Logan, who first appeared in 1956 in the J.B. Allen / Amalgamated Press title Comet, and moved to Tiger in 1959 when the two titles were merged.
Jet Ace Logan continued to appear in Tiger until 1968, and in several issues of Thriller Detective Library, starting with 1961’s #383, a story featured in the collection.
A rival to characters such as Eagle‘s Dan Dare and Lion’s Captain Condor, Jim “Jet-Ace” Logan, was an ace interplanetary pilot of the RAF whose stories were set about 100 years in the future, accompanied, n all but the earliest stories, by his regular copilot, Plum-Duff Charteris. The strip was originally drawn by John Gillat, and writers included Kenneth Bulmer, David Motton, and Frank S. Pepper. Artists included Kurt Caesar, Geoff Campion, Brian Lewis (delivering some stunning work on the Jet Ace Tiger stories), Francisco Solano López and Ron Turner.
Fleetway Picture Library Classics presents Jet-Ace Logan reprints Thriller Picture Library #383, #410, #418 and #442 from 1962/63 and includes a comprehensive artist checklist and introduction.
Also out in May is Fleetway Picture Library Classics presents Larrigan, a collection of western strip’s from Lone Rider Picture Library #1, #4, #9 and Cowboy Picture Library #463 from 1961/62, four complete 64 page stories featuring art by Arturo Del Castillo; plus comprehensive artist checklist and introduction.
Regular downthetubes readers will remember Book Palace published another collection of Arturo’s work, The Complete Adventures of The Three Musketeers, from the British comics Film Fun and Lion, last year – and the art and quality of reproduction was excellent.
Out next month is Illustrators Issue 25, a silver special, which includes features on Italian artist Milo Manara, the undisputed master of erotica, Margaret Brundage, the doyenne of the Golden Age of pulps, Art Frahm, perhaps the most original of the ’50s pin-up artists, and Flash Gordon artist Alex Raymond‘s pin-up art.
Future issues will include material on artists such as Arthur Barbosa, Leo Baxendal, John Michael Burns, Jesus Blasco, a Special devoted to the work of Arturo del Castillo, Chris Foss, Mike Mignola and many more.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
