London gallery Space Station Sixty-Five has announced an event with comic creator Steven Appleby and others, “Nothing is Real: Talks Gender”, part of its programming for “Nothing is Real” Steven’s largest exhibition to date.

Taking place on Wednesday 30th April 2025, “Nothing is Real: Talks Gender” will offer a conversation that seems more timely and urgent than ever – a one-night-only panel event spotlighting, and celebrating, queer and gender non-conforming artists, writers and creatives who live and work beyond the binary.

Panelists include non-binary emergency medicine doctor, television presenter and activist Dr Ronx IkhariaE-J Scott, Curator of the Museum of Transology and the Founding Co-Director of Trans Pride Collective UK and Ireland, and recipient of the UK Activist Museum; non-binary writer, editor and lecturer Levi Bridgeman, whoworks in theatre, film, prose and radio; writer, writing mentor, creative consultant, speaker, and independent scholar MJ Barker; and, of course, Steven Appleby, the absurdist cartoonist, illustrator and artist most well known for their surreal yet personal comic strips published in the New Musical ExpressThe Guardian and The Times.

The discussion will be chaired by TS Eliot Prize-winning poet and author Joelle Taylor, and will be followed by an informal audience Q&A.

Tickets are free but space is limited, so booking is strongly advised.

Steven Appleby’s “Nothing is Real” exhibition continues at Space Station Sixty-Five until 10th May 2025.

“Nothing is Real is about secrets, and things not being what they appear to be,” he says. “It’s about what the next door neighbours are doing on the other side of the sitting room wall. It’s about private spaces and dark places behind closed curtains, beneath pavements, and down in basements.

“It’s about who – or what – your brother, sister, best friend and co-worker turn into when you’renot looking. It’s about the meaning of life and the meaninglessness of life. It’s about this world we allshare that exists inside our minds – not out there all around us. It’s about reality itself. It’s about nothing… and it’s about everything.”
