Book Palace Books have joined the ranks of businesses selling comic art through the online auction service Catawiki, as part of Comic Art Auctions curated by Louis Girard.
On offer as part of Louis’ latest auction is an incredible “Strontium Dog” title page for Part 11 of “The Moses Incident”, written by Alan Grant, drawn by Carlos Ezquerra, lettered by Jack Potter, first published in 2000AD Prog 345, cover dated 3rd December 1983.
In this very early page from the series, Johnny Alpha is facing down Malak Brood in the final battle of the story.
Bidding is cut at over €500 on the European-based auction site. This Catawiki Exclusive Comic Art Auction, which also includes art by Hal Foster and Bernie Wrightson, ends on Sunday 29th September 2024.
“We’ve decided that we will trial run selling certain artworks on this Catawiki platform to help make a broader range of collectors aware of our existence in the universe,” say the Book Palace team.
“The page is drawn onto a paper called Caballo 109, very similar stock to Bristol board, and Ezquerra uses a magnificent array of inking techniques to show detail, and enhance the contrast and action in this page. The page still has the original title pasted on, as well as the 2000AD ‘Credit Card’, showing credits for the author, artist and letterer.
“The first panel of this artwork could very well have been inspired by A Trip to the Moon, the 1902 French science-fiction adventure film written, directed and produced by Georges Méliès, whereas the bottom section of the page is reminiscent of characters in the hit manga Dragonball battling with fireballs.
“This is an exceptional page of Strontium Dog artwork by Ezquerra, the artist who first drew Judge Dredd and coined his iconic look. Very rarely, is there a panel as large as this on any of his works which are not front covers.”
