Summer Game Fest: First-ever Green Games Showcase to plant 50,000 trees for the planet

Summer Game Fest 2025

In a groundbreaking move for the global video games community, Summer Game Fest 2025 will host the first-ever Green Games Showcase, launching later this week, spotlighting the industry’s growing commitment to the environment and enabling at least 50,000 trees to be planted for habitat restoration.

Spearheaded by PlanetPlay, the not-for-profit organisation that channels the power of games into real-world environmental impact, the showcase marks a major milestone in the convergence of entertainment and sustainability.

Premiering June 7th at 13:00 PST, the Green Games Showcase will be livestreamed globally as a key feature of Summer Game Fest. Tune in at youtube.com/@thegameawards.

Hosted by respected games journalist Will Freeman, the showcase will spotlight a curated selection of games across all platforms leading the way in environmental engagement: from titles with sustainability at their core, to those featuring in-game activations that raise awareness or drive action, and games making direct contributions to green causes. This groundbreaking showcase will highlight a range of ways games can ‘go green’ no matter what platform or genre!

Together, these projects demonstrate how the games industry is empowering players to take part in building a more sustainable future and generating real world impact, just by playing your favourite games.

TreesPlease Games, a studio founded to make games that protect nature and fight climate change, celebrates a milestone year for the developer, across both player action and industry recognition. Since its debut in 2023, Longleaf Valley has been designed with a ‘Play It, Plant It’ model, where trees planted in-game result in real trees being planted in areas of the world where deforestation has already occurred

The Green Games Showcase underscores a broader commitment from the games industry to confront the climate crisis head-on, with participating studio and platform partners including Actrio Studio, Amazon Games, Anima Interactive, Ash Games, Axlebolt, EARTHWise Global, Flick Games, Lab Cave Games, Leti Arts, Lockwood Publishing, MeshMinds (Roblox), Netspeak Games, NEARstudios, Northern Forge, Pixel Federation Games, Sensible Band, Serious Bros, Sharkmob, Skybound Games, Solarpunk Jam, Sporty Games, Starvania, Team17, Ten Square Games, Tilting Point, Tiny Bytes, Treesplease Games, Trevor Noah’s Day Zero Games, Vizor Apps, Wicked Saints Studios and Yaldi Games.

PlanetPlay Ambassador Sir Ian Livingstone CBE, a founding father of the UK games industry and a lifelong champion of ‘the power of play’, will join host Will Freeman during the stream for a thought-provoking Q&A on how games can inspire meaningful climate action and drive real-world impact.

The initiative aims to raise funds by June 30th to plant 50,000 trees in support of reforestation and the restoration of endangered animal habitats in Timor-Leste, through a partnership with leading local nonprofit WithOneSeed.

The Green Game Showcase livestream will also reveal the winner and finalists of the Day Zero Games: SOLARPUNK JAM, hosted by Trevor Noah’s Day Zero Productions and Anima Interactive, sponsored by Cinereach and Carmack Collective, and which invites game developers worldwide to create projects that explore the Solarpunk movement – a DIY, countercultural approach to a more sustainable future.

PlanetPlay CEO Rhea Loucas said: “This is more than just a showcase, it’s a rallying cry. The games community is one of the most passionate and creative forces on the planet. By bringing green gaming to the Summer Game Fest stage, right as the world marks World Environment Day, we’re proving that play can be powerful, and that environmental impact can be entertaining, inclusive, and inspiring.”
