A current Catawiki US Comic Art Auction includes a bit of a curiosity – a Doctor Who sketch by the late Neal Adams, date unknown.
On offer is a striking portrait of Matt Smith as The Eleventh Doctor, measuring 22 x 11.5 cm, part of an outstanding collection of rare drawings, rare comics with original drawings and signatures, figures and many other collector’s items, which will be auctioned on Catawiki in the coming months. Bidding has yet to meet the reserve price.
The auction description indicates “the owner of this collection has met all the artists personally or has been in contact with them by mail”.
Award-winning artist Neal Adams, who died in 2022, is probably best known for his work on DC Comics such as Batman and Green Lantern, celebrated for his dynamic line work and his naturalistic way of depicting figures.
Starting out in the business aged just 16, some of his notable works include Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Strange Adventures featuring the character, Deadman, The Brave and the Bold, for DC Comics; and The Avengers and X-Men for Marvel.

He also co-created characters Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat, and John Stewart for DC Comics, and was the founder of Continuity Comics. He also provided covers for TV-inspired comics such as Charlton Comics’ short-lived The Six Million Dollar Man.
While Neal Adams isn’t known for his Doctor Who work, his youngest son Josh Adams, drew several Doctor Who comic stories for IDW Publishing: “Your Destiny Awaits”, published in the Doctor Who Annual 2011, “Space Squid” (collected in It Came from Outer Space), “Time Fraud”, in which the TARDIS is drawn to a is drawn to a time-lost chrononaut, and “The Eye of Ashaya“, the latter with Marc Deening.
