The £1500 Dandy? First issue offered at auction

A rare copy of the first issue of The Dandy, published in 1937, is up for auction in Sheffield next Thursday (30th September 2021).

Part of a Specialist Collectable Toys & Live Steam Auction organised by the Sheffield Auction Gallery, The Dandy Comic No.1, cover dated 4th December 1937, is something of a highlight in the sale, with bidding at £1500.

It features more familiar characters like Korky the Cat, Desperate Dan and Keyhole Kate, alongside others long lost, like Freddy The Fearless Fly, among others.

It’s showing it’s age with some damage to the front cover and various wear and tear throughout, but all pages present, although pull-out and free gift whistle are not.

More intact copies of this first issue have been sold by Compal in 2015 and 2019 for over £4000. Hence the “low” starting price!

The auction, primarily devoted to model railways, also features several separate lots of US DC, Marvel and Disney comics, plus independent titles too, such as a lot that includes over 100 copies of Dave Sim’s Cerebus comic, with bidding starting at a more modest £60.

Star Wars toys, including a Palitoy Millennium Falcon as featured in Return Of The Jedi, are also on offer, as is a boxed Corgi “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” car, and a box of five Gerry Anderson TV show-related vehicles.
