Fourth annual Tripwire comic awards – nominations revealed, voting begins

Nominations in the fourth Annual Tripwire Awards have just been announced by Tripwire magazine – and downthetubes is again in the running, in the Best Comics-Related Website, alongside Broken Frontier, ComicScene and Newsarama.

British creators nominated in other categories include Ram V (Best Writer), Liam Sharp and Mike Perkins (Best Artist), Brady Webb (Best Editor) and Rian Hughes (Best Designer).

Tripwire has been championing US and UK comics first in print and, since 2015, on the web, and 2022 will be the fourth year of this awards ceremony, which aims to celebrate the cream of UK and US comic talent.

In previous years, the Tripwire team have tried to reflect the very best of this year’s comics and the talent who make them possible, and that mission continues, although we would venture to suggest that there are some comic genres omitted from the nominations.

The nominations have been carefully collated by Tripwire’s editor-in-chief Joel Meadows, Comicon.com’s senior editor Olly MacNamee, Mass Movement’s Tim Cundle and The Convention Collective’s Leonard Sultana.

Of the Awards, Tripwire editor-in-chief Joel Meadows says, “Tripwire has been promoting comics for thirty years now and, in 2018, we felt it was time for us to launch our own awards which would take our support to another level. We feel we’re building on the success of the previous three years of ceremonies, as well as reflecting the changing landscape of comics with some new exciting categories.”

While we’re very honoured to be nominated, we’re sorry to see that there again isn’t a category for humour comics in the line-up, which must be a huge disappointment to the many creators working on titles such as BEANO, Monster Fun and The Phoenix, to say nothing of the incredible work being done by independent creators on both sides of the Atlantic.

Neither is there any acknowledgment of the huge range of European comics now available in English, surely also deserving of a category. Let’s hope that these might be added next year.

• Nominations for the 18 categories are open for people to vote here, on from 8.00pm today, Monday 22nd August 2022 through until Midnight 26th September 2022. The results of the awards will be announced at a special ceremony online later in the year (date and details to be confirmed).

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
