As part of the South Ken Kids Festival the acclaimed French illustrator and cartoonist Barroux will orchestrate a special live drawing event around his graphic novel Alpha: Abidjan-Gare du Nord on 21st November 2015, about a man from the Ivory Coast who decides to leave his homeland and head for Paris to join his family without a visa.
Barroux, whose drawings have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and in Forbes Magazine, will be joined by graphic novel specialist Paul Gravett to discuss the role of current affairs in his work both as an illustrator and as a press cartoonist.
Barroux has published over 50 picture books for Phoenix Yard Books, including the recent Line of Fire – the diary of an unknown soldier set in during World War One. His main occupation remains seizing current issues, like immigration in Alpha, and adapting them in picture books for all ages. He was illustrator in residence at the 2013 Edinburgh International Book Festival and returned there in 2014 to promote Line of Fire.
Translator Sarah Ardizzone will also be involved to present the Translation Machine project created around the book and to talk about how to translate a graphic novel.
