Publisher Printed in Blood has teamed up with Penguin Random House Del Rey for a new hardcover art book book full of original artwork inspired by the hit Netflix series Stranger Things – and along with an image by Marvel artist Bill Sienkiewicz, it includes art by Stephen Sampson, a terrific illustrator whose stunning early work for Marvel UK captured the imaginations of many.
Visions from the Upside Down: A Stranger Things Art Book is a 300-page publication from Printed In Blood, the latest release in their ongoing series of artbooks.
More than 200 artists feature, drawing from the earthly dimensions of comics, illustration, fine art, videogames, and animation, delivering a unique vision of the world of Hawkins, Indiana. >Visions from the Upside Down: A Stranger Things Art Book offers some 200-plus brand-new images have been created specifically for this volume, which also includes an all-new introduction.
Printed in Blood have just begun promoting the book, leading with art that includes a wonderful piece by Stephen Sampson, who downthetubes readers will recognise a one of the cover artist’s for Marvel UK’s anthology title Overkill back in the 1990s, whose work also featured on the cover of one edition of my own 2010 art book, ScFi Art Now.
Stephen, aka “The Dark Inker”, has been working in the entertainment industry for a number years. Clients include, NASA, LucasFilm, Marvel, Disney, Pixar, 20th Century Fox, Imagine Publishing, “Judge Dredd” art for 2000AD, BossAlien and Natural Motion – to name but a few! He’s also a member of the Poster Posse, a diverse collective of global artists who work with pop Culture themes to create unique, collectible art.
Along with Stephen’s image the cover, other art first revealed by DreadCentral is by comic artist and illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz and children’s book illustrator Faryn Hughes.
Printed In Blood was born from a mutual love of horror movies, art and design and the wealth of artistic talent working today who you may or may not be aware of. They see ourselves as curators of a legacy of pop culture that has been growing for decades, delivering books, posters and more based upon classic, cult and popular sci-fi, horror and action films, including their artbook series that began with their The Thing release in 2017, inspired by director John Carpenter’s movie.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
