Will Simpson, Lyndon Webb deliver new covers for 2000AD-inspired Sector 13 reprints

Issue Four of the Belfast-based non-profit 2000AD fanzine Sector 13 is getting a reprint – with a stunning Venus Bluegenes cover by top artist Will Simpson.

Sector 13 Issue Four Reprint - Cover by Will Simpson

The reprint follows the near sell out of Issue Four at the Lawless convention earlier this year, and the announcement of the release of a compilation of Issues One and Two of Sector 13, with a fantastic cover by Lyndon Webb.

“Lawless saw us run very short of copies of Issue Four, with its fantastic cosplay cover featuring our very own Jay Scout,” the team announced on their Facebook page. “So just in time for Titancon in Belfast this month and Omagh Comicfest in September, we have reprinted issue four with a brand new cover.

“And what a cover it is! A painting by, Will Simpson, returning to the character of Venus Bluegenes. To say we are thrilled would be an understatement… We think this is something a little bit special.”

Better known today for his work on films and TV, Will first drew Venus Bluegenes for “The Pleasures of the Flesh”, written by Grant Morrison, for the 1988 2000AD Sci-Fi Special, and would go on to work with Dave Gibbons on early episode of the Rogue Trooper revamp, “Rogue Trooper (Friday)”, going on to work on TOXIC and various US comic titles, including Hellblazer, Aliens and Vamps.

“Will has spent the last few years lending his skills to Game of Thrones and other TV shows and movies,” notes Sector 13‘s Peter Duncan, “but his massive enthusiasm for the comic medium remains, as this painting shows.”

Sector 13 Issue One and Two Compilation - Cover by Lyndon Webb

Sector 13 has grown considerably since its first issue, an independent SF title mashing 2D comic strip with photo strip and more. What started as a 24-page comic has now grown into a 44-page monster and with strong sales and people still wanting to buy everything from Issue One on, the Sector 13 team felt they had to try and keep the stories from these issues in print.

Instead of putting out new copies of their first two issues, they decided to combine them into a single 44-page compilation, combining the comic strip material from our opening two issues, with a new cover by Lyndon Webb. (The first two issues text pages and prose stories aren’t included, but do now feature on the title’s Blog).
