Former Marvel editor Tim Quinn and comic artists Charlie Adlard and Emma Vieceli are guests at the Writing on the Wall Festival in Liverpool next month.
Writing on the Wall is a Liverpool-based community organisation that coordinates projects and events that celebrate writing in all its forms. They work with a broad and inclusive definition of writing that embraces literature, creative writing, journalism and non-fiction, poetry, songwriting, and storytelling. Writing on the Wall works with local, national and international writers whose work provokes controversy and debate, and works with all of Liverpool’s communities to promote and celebrate individual and collective creativity.
Writing on the Wall hosts a month long annual writing festival each May – the culmination of year round writing and spoken word projects involving people of all ages from diverse communities across the region. Since its inception WoW has delivered 15 festivals bringing high profile guests to the city to participate in unique and provocative events.
At a workshop titled “Marvel Mayhem – Unmasking the Real Superheroes” on Saturday 16th May at Liverpool Central Library, join the “notorious” (the Festival’s description, not mine!) Tim Quinn for an exclusive, hands-on workshop to make your own comic book creation.
The workshop will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the links between UK and American graphic novels with Tim, Charlie and Emma taking the stage to tell attendees their stories, give tips and answer questions.
Scriptwriter and editor Tim Quinn worked on TV Comic, The Beano, The Dandy, Doctor Who Magazine and at Marvel UK, before heading to the US to work for Marvel Comics on the world famous Spider-Man, X-Men and the Incredible Hulk, (to name just a few). Tim has also worked as a writer for the Guardian newspaper, as editor for America’s oldest publication The Saturday Evening Post and producer for LWT’s The South Bank Show as well as producing a show on the history of Marvel Comics.
Charlie Adlard has spent the majority of his time working on critically acclaimed The Walking Dead, for which he received many industry awards. In his time as an artist he has worked on many other projects as far reaching as Mars Attacks, The X-Files, Judge Dredd, Savage, Batman, X-Men, Superman etc and creator-owned projects of Astronauts In Trouble, Codeflesh, Rock Bottom, and White Death.
Emma Vieceli‘s work includes the bestselling Vampire Academy graphic novel series for Penguin Random House, the Yalsa 2013-recommended Avalon Chronicles for Oni Press and the critically acclaimed independent web series, Breaks. She is now working on a series for Walker books and provides guest art for titles like Marvel’s Young Avengers & Vertigo’s Dead Boy Detectives. Alongside comics, she worked on the A&E television series, Bates Motel, providing the sketchbook found by Norman Bates. She is also one of the patrons of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
