Golemchik is part of NoBrow’s excellent 17 x 23 series, a short story of lost innocence and times long gone by with a superb, eye catching cover.  Remember those days when kids could play for hours in the woods without fear of strangers? This is what Golemchik tackles with real style and genuine affection, mixing a creepy House of Mystery vibe with the impressionable days of Peanuts and Charlie Brown comics and cartoons.

The book triumphantly then takes a dreamlike turn to the creepy zone. Things happen with the Golem that you don’t expect….

William Exley is a new creator to me whose past projects include Stuntman 2099 released in 2011, a comic about the perils of being a human stuntman in the mechanised future. Golemchik comes out of the gate with a really fully formed style, full of great storytelling and spot on pacing on every page.  This book flips from cute, to eerie, to scary to downright sad. Set in small town England, the story speaks to some great themes of innocence, mistrust and freedom.

The art lifts this story to a class above many of his contemporaries, told in a scale that predicts the views and feelings of the young boy central character. The colours have been chosen in two seperate and distinct pallattes, one showing the brown leaves and mud of the woods and the other showing the greys and shadows of the night.

This is excellent work and well worth your attention when it comes out in June this year. Get on this!
