JOHNNY RED’S LAST BATTLE

In the last year of a long and dreadful war, as vengeful Russian forces reach the German frontier, British-born fighter pilot Johnny Redburn leads Falcon Squadron in deadly strikes against the retreating Nazis. With all his comrades gone and his lover, Nina Petrova, lost somewhere in the maelstrom, the “Red Devil” knows his own doom is only a matter of time. Maybe the next mission, or the one after that – but it’s coming.

When a figure from the distant past reappears with an offer of a clandestine operation – an all-out effort against a nightmarish enemy weapons program that could claim the lives of thousands – Johnny finds himself agreeing, despite terrible misgivings. The risks are many, but the prize is the whereabouts of the woman he loves – and Johnny Red will fly through hell for Nina Petrova, no matter what the cost. Yet the unspeakable cruelty of the Soviet hierarchy, not to mention the return of an old and lethal enemy, will push the Englishman’s resolve well past the breaking point. High above the freezing Arctic Ocean, one last aerial duel will decide who lives, who dies – and who is lost forever.

Written by Garth Ennis (The BoysPreacher) and drawn by Keith Burns (Battle ActionOut of the Blue), A Couple of Heroes brings the saga of Johnny and Nina – the Red Devil and the Angel of Death – to its fiery, action-packed conclusion.

CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS OF BRITAIN’S MOST CONTROVERSIAL COMIC!

Violent, gritty and unrelenting, Action comic was the brainchild of Pat Mills and Geoff Kemp. Tasked with creating a new anthology comic for the IPC’s boys adventure division, the pair rapidly developed a winning formula: reimagining existing story ideas from fresh perspectives and infusing them with a health dose of modern realism. With strips such as “Hookjaw”, “Dredger”, “Look Out For Lefty” and “Blackjack”, success was instantaneous but so was the criticism. Many of the press including London’s Evening StandardThe Sun and the Daily Mail were quick to denounce the comic, while Mary Whitehouse and the pressure group, Delegates Opposing Violent Education, piled pressure on the IPC board to do something about it.

In less than a year, Action had been pulled from circulation, then returned months later, a sanitised, pale shadow of its former self. But the spark had already been lit. Action had made its mark and became the catalyst for the evolution of the British comics scene, pathing the way for 2000AD and the British invasion of UK talent into America.

Collected here are the first twelve issues of Action, containing all of the strips and some of the editorial that created so much infamy back in the 1970s.

Action: The Sevenpenny Nightmare Micro Site – compiled by Moose Harris

About The Authors

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000AD’s most popular stories such as “Sláine”, “Nemesis the Warlock” and “A.B.C. Warriors”. Amongst his credits are Marshal Law (Marvel and DC Comics), co-created with Kevin O’Neill, the French graphic novel series Requiem, Vampire Knight with artist Olivier Ledroit, and Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! The Secret History of 2000 AD and Judge Dredd. His current projects include Joe Pineapples: Tin Man, illustrated by Simon Bisley and Clint Langley, Spacewarp, and Kiss My Axe! The Secret History of Sláine the Warped Warrior.

John Wagner has been scripting for 2000AD for more years than he cares to remember. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. Outside of 2000AD, his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence.

One of the most prolific writers in the comic’s history, Gerry Finley-Day holds a special place in many 2000AD fans’ hearts as the creator of classics like “Rogue Trooper” (with Dave Gibbons), “Fiends of the Eastern Front” and “The V.C.s”, as well as “Harry 20 on the High Rock” and “Ant Wars”. A keen “ideas man”, Finley-Day’s concepts of the horrors future warfare had in store were key to both “Rogue Trooper” and “The V.C.s” continuing popularity, ensuring that their recent return to the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic was well-received. Finley-Day also scripted episodes of “Judge Dredd” and “Dan Dare”, and co-scripted much of “Invasion!” (and entirely scripted the prequel story, “Disaster 1990!”).

Steve MacManus was the editor of 2000AD during its 1980s heyday, shepherding it through its ‘Golden Age’ as he commissioned numerous hit series such as “The Ballad of Halo Jones”, “Sláine”, “Rogue Trooper”, “Nemesis the Warlock” and more. For many, he remains the definitive editor of the multi-award-winning SF anthology.

Kelvin Gosnell served as 2000AD’s second editor, from Progs 17 to 85 (18th June 1977 – 7th October 1978). He also wrote “Blackhawk”, “Dan Dare”, “A Joe Black Adventure”, “Judge Dredd”, “Project Overkill”, “Ro-Jaws’ Robo-Tales”, “The Stainless Steel Rat” and “Tharg’s Future Shocks”, as well as co-writing the first series of “Flesh”.

Tom Tully was one the most prolific writers ever to grace British comics, his diverse portfolio of work produced over four decades. Born in Glasgow, Tully entered the industry in the sixties when he began working for Fleetway. One of his earliest strips, “Heros the Spartan”, ran in the original Eagle and was illustrated by the great Frank Bellamy. He also wrote “Mytek the Mighty” (for Valiant) and “The Steel Claw” (also for Valiant) in the same decade. The 1970s saw Tully work on a variety of significant stories including “Adam Eterno” (Thunder), “Johnny Red” (Battle), “Harlem Heroes” (2000AD), “The Leopard from Lime Street” (Buster) and “Roy of the Rovers” (Tiger), the strip he worked on longer than any other writer.

The Ultimate Lawman versus the Dark Knight Detective, and while heroes clash…in Gotham City the psychos are running riot!

The anniversary edition of the classic UK/US team up crossover comic, is presented in an oversized format, with rescanned and cleaned up artwork to present Simon Bisley’s influential work in a glorious new light.

John Wagner has been scripting for 2000AD for more years than he cares to remember. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. Outside of 2000AD his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence.

With over 300 2000AD stories to his name – not to mention over 250 Daily Star Judge Dredd strips – Alan Grant’s prolific creative record speaks for itself. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, the late writer is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title.

Simon Bisley occupies an almost unique place in 2000AD history, as one of the first UK artists to popularise the fully-painted style pioneered by Argentinian artist Alberto Breccia. His highly dynamic artwork made his two major series in the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic — A.B.C. Warriors: The Black Hole and Sláine: The Horned God — very popular, as they remain to date. He also illustrated Heavy Metal Dredd in the Megazine, an ultra-graphic, adults-only take on the lawman, before going on to pencil the hugely successful first Batman/Judge Dredd crossover story, Judgement on Gotham. Bisley has provided countless pin-ups and short pieces across an astonishing variety of comics, from legendary fantasy anthology Heavy Metal to anarchic DC superhero series Lobo, and has an even more extensive CV in Europe, where his painted style enjoys enormous success.

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000AD’s most popular stories such as Sláine, Nemesis and A.B.C. Warriors.

Mike Collins is the illustrator and co-creator of American Gothic. He has also worked on Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper Sinister Dexter, Sláine and several Future Shocks.

Glenn Fabry is a classic 2000 AD artist, best known for his innovative and highly detailed work on Slaine, though he has also illustrated Judge Dredd and a Future Shock, not to mention part of the Batman/Judge Dredd crossover story ‘Die Laughing’. Fabry’s best-known work outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic is almost certainly the full run of covers he painted for Preacher. However, his career is split between covers and sequential work, and he ahs also contributed to A1, The Authority, Global Frequency, Hellblazer, The Scarab, Swamp Thing and Transmetropolitan.

British-born writer, artist and letterer Steve Parkhouse started his career at Marvel comics where he worked on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Back in the UK he was one of the first artists to work on the acclaimed anthology Warrior, co-creating The Bojeffries Saga with writer Alan Moore and he also worked for Marvel UK, writing Night Raven which was illustrated by David Lloyd and The Black Knight – both of which ran in Hulk Weekly. Having enjoyed a successful run writing Dr. Who Weekly with Dave Gibbons on art chores, Steve also illustrated several strips for 2000 AD, including Judge Dredd, Luke Kirby and Morrison and Millar’s Big Dave.

Through those bitter years of the Second World War, Sergeant Trelawny led, mastered and fought beside the toughest, proudest soldiers in the British Army.

This is Trelawny’s story…

A lost classic, Trelawny was illustrated by Spanish comics art legend, Victor de la Fuente, a Spanish comic book artist. Although famous for his work on war, western and fantasy comics, he also contributed to girls’ comics, drawing the serial “A New Kind of Lovin’”, for Valentine. He died in 2010.

One of the most fondly remembered characters from the Treasury of British Comics returns in a tensely told and lushly rendered tale of honour, duty, loyalty and sacrifice.

As the Nazis rain terror throughout Europe, Allied forces are on the run in North Africa. It’s October 1942 and Rommel’s Panzers are unrelenting in their pursuit. Wing Commander Robert ‘Battler’ Britton of the RAF and his squadron have been dispatched to a remote American airstrip to spearhead a joint action against Hitler’s war machine. Now these two groups of reluctant allies must somehow put aside their mutual distrust and work together… a task that is much easier said than done!

Garth Ennis began his career on Crisis, 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine, for which he wrote Judge Dredd, Strontium Dogs, True Faith and others. Outside of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic he is known for Preacher, The Boys, Hitman, The Punisher and a great many war comics- including War Stories, Battlefields, Out Of The Blue, The Stringbags and Sara.

Colin Wilson has gone from iconic status at 2000 AD to European superstardom as the artist of Moebius’ classic western, Young Blueberry. For the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Wilson was a key early Rogue Trooper artist. He has also pencilled Future Shocks, Judge Dredd, Pulp Sci-Fi, Tor Cyan, as well crime series, Du Plomb Dans La Tete (Headshot), for French publisher Casterman.

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own

In the immediate aftermath of The War of the Worlds, Britain, having defeated the invading Martians, is a weakened shell of its former self. As it begins the process of rebuilding, a new, more Earlthly, foe seizes its opportunity.

Scarlet Traces continues in this fourth volume of Ian Edginton and D’Israeli’s critically acclaimed sequel to H.G. Wells’ iconic novel The War of the Worlds.

Ian Edginton is a New York Times bestselling author and multiple Eisner Award nominee. He has written Batman’66 meets The Avengers (Steed and Mrs Peel, not the other ones!) for DC Comics as well as Judge Dredd, Stickleback, Helium, Kingmaker and Brass Sun for 2000AD. He lives and works in Birmingham, England.

Under the pen name D’Israeli, Matt Brooker has been a comic artist since 1988. He is perhaps best known for his collaborations with writer Ian Edginton, including Leviathan, Kingdom of the Wicked, The War of the Worlds, Scarlet Traces, Leviathan and Batman. Other career highlights include work on Sandman, collaborations with Warren Ellis, including Lazarus Churchyard and the cryptic SVK, and his colouring on the later Miracleman stories, to which he’ll be returning in 2015. Since 2003, he’s been a regular contributor to 2000AD, mostly as series artist on Stickleback with Ian Edginton and Low Life with Rob Williams. His and Rob’s creator owned series, Ordinary, was published in the Megazine and is now available as a graphic novel. He lives in Nottingham, UK and wishes he had a cat.
