Corflu announces 2021 dates for science fiction fanzine fan gathering

Corflu, the annual convention for science fiction fanzine fans, has announced Corflu Concorde 38 will be held 26th – 28th March 2021 in Bristol.

Corflu is a small, annual convention of SF fanzine fans. Other conventions with a strong fanzine aspect are held across the US, Australia, and the UK, but Corflu is now the only one which keeps fanzines as its primary focus.

Typically moving its venue from year to year, the name “Corflu” is derived from CORrection FLUid, which older downthetubes readers will know is a substance that allowed typing errors in mimeograph stencils to be corrected, which was in much demand during the low-tech, pre-computer days of fanzine publishing.

Chaired by Rob Jackson and taking place at the Mercure Hotel, the event will not only discuss fanzines but also host the Fan Activity Achievement Awards (FAAns). Launched in 1975, revived after a 15-year gap in 1995, these are given for work originally published in the previous calendar year, although this has in the past been expressed as “the last twelve months” before settling on the current window.

Voting is open to anyone with an interest in fanzines – no convention or group membership is required. The ballot is typically issued early in the year the awards are scheduled to be given and is linked to from the corflu.org main page, efanzines.com and other venerable sources.

While Corflu Concorde organisers are of necessity keeping an eye on developments in the battle to bring an end to the Pandemic, there’s also a clear sense of determination from the team to deliver a physical event, in partnership with a hotel who are very helpful, and willing to be pragmatic should circumstances force us to change the date.

Another major plus, born out of necessity as a result of the COVID crisis, has been the massive development of expertise in video conferencing which may allow the event to have an even livelier virtual Corflu as a support for the real thing.
