Born in Rome in 1967, award-winning Italian comic artist Massimo Carnevale is perhaps best known for his cover art, for both American and Italian publishers, but draws strips, too.
He has provided covers, for example, featuring some of the magazines’ most popular strips, the medieval adventure “Dago”, supernatural investigator “Martin Hel” and the western series, “John Doe”, also drawing stories for the latter.
Carnevale started his career at publishers Cioè and Tattilo in 1987, going on to join the artist team at Eura Editoriale. His first cover featured on Editoriale Aurea’s weekly magazine, Skorpio in 1990.
He often worked with writer Lorenzo Bartoli on comic strip work, such as episodes of “Napoli Ground Zero”, published back in 1994.
Based in Macerata, Italy, Massimo has also worked internationally, initially creating, for example, many of the covers for the Y: The Last Man and Northlanders series, published by DC Comics.
He has used acrylics in his work as if they were watercolours, to achieve total control of lights and shades while he paints, but has also worked digitally, on, for example, covers for John Doe, and Northlanders. “I like it because you can see immediately the result, I like it for the effects, more colour controlling, etc.” he explained in a now Wayback archived 2008 interview for Newsarama with Matt Brady.
His cover credits for American publishers also include Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, for Dark Horse, Del Ray Comics’ The Talisman: The Road of Trials, and Dune: The Waters of Kanly, for Boom! Studios.
