Europe Comics has announced it will be making its official San Diego Comic-Con debut with its very own booth (#1220), panels, live drawing events and signing sessions.
Europe Comics began as an idea of Franco-Belgian comics agent Mediatoon Licensing. Three years (and a lot of work) later, it evolved into a 13-partner pan-European alliance, supported by the European Commission and held together by the desire to spread the European graphic novel heritage around the world.
The ambitious 13 have set themselves three main targets. First, the creation of a collective digital imprint, replicating European comics variety, richness and originality, in English and digital format, distributed through global and local e-tailers. Their Europe Comics Catalogue is meant for both, the final reader and the foreign publisher interested in licensing in English or other languages.
Europe Comics also aims to give international exposure to European authors, through author tours and events across Europe and the US – and is working on the creation of a European comics online directory, providing readers and professionals with wide-ranging information such as history of European comics, global calendar of comics events, academic studies, market overviews and more.
Their Comic Con debut will see the appearance of three major Europe Comics creators from France and Spain making their way to San Diego. Mathieu Reynés – the French creator of the sci-fi pearl Harmony, is also the scriptwriter of the mystery-filled Water Memory, and the artist behind the best-selling Alter Ego series.
All three artists will be at the Europe Comics booth every day for live drawing and signing sessions. Europe Comics will also be giving away a lot of e-books and other fun merchandising, so make sure to pass by their booth if you’re going! But if you’re not – not to worry! The publisher will also have loads of giveaways and specials happening online to celebrate the occasion!
Europe Comics will also be hosting two exciting panels where European authors will meet with top American authors. The first panel – How Old is Young Adult? – will bring together Mathieu Reynés and the critically-acclaimed American novelist Matthew J. Kirby (Last Descendants –Assassin’s Creed series), where the two will discuss and compare their work, experience and readership, as seen from the two sides of the Atlantic. The panel will be moderated by Brigid Alverson (comics and graphic novels journalist for Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal amongst other publications and blogs).
The second panel – Europe vs USA: European and American Creators Meet – will be hosted by PublishersWeekly‘s Calvin Reid. During the panel, Roger and Gabriel Hernández Walta will meet with special guests Jason Latour (Southern Bastards) and Andrew C Robinson (The 5th Beatle) to discuss their experiences as comics creators working on two different continents.
• The dates and times of the panels are still to be confirmed, so stay tuned for more updates via the Europe Comics web site at www.europecomics.com
