A treat for Trevor von Eeden fans: an all-new Count Vertigo artwork

Ahead of his upcoming appearance at Galaxy Con in Raleigh on 24th to 27th July, which should be fun, since the 24th is his 66th birthday, artist Trevor von Eeden has kindly shared an all-new Count Vertigo image with us, a special commission he was asked for.

Count Vertigo is a DC Comics supervillain, created by Gerry Conway and Trevor Von Eeden, who first appeared in World’s Finest Comics #251 (1978), first battling Black Canary, then Green Arrow. Capable of inducing vertigo and disorientation in others, he’s the last descendant of the royal family of Vlatava, a fictional Eastern European country. Later enlisted into the Suicide Squad, the character has also appeared in various other media, including Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice and Arrow.

Regular comic fans will recognise Trevor von Eeden as the co-creator of Black Lightning, and older readers may recall his work on Batman. I had the privilege of working with Trevor on a sadly unpublished “King Cobra” short story for STRIP Magazine, progressed as far as final art for most pages, before the project imploded, but we have kept in contact since. Trevor has shared several of his incredible commissioned cover recreations with me for Marvel (Black Panther, Fantastic Four, and more), which are a frequent delight to receive in the mailbox.

Trevor always puts a huge amount of thought, energy and work into these special commissions, and this Count Vertigo artwork was no exception, the illustration evolving in its development from initial character sketch, through a more traditional take featuring Apokolips, to the final, stunning, MC Escher-inspired art.

Developing the new art, Trevor tells us that, for this Vertigo illo, “I felt the pic needed to include 1) A cool pose for Vertigo, natch 2) a display of his signature concentric rings and 3) An M C Escher-like distortion of viewpoint or perspective, symbolic of his powers in effect.”

I think you can safely say he delivers – and how!

Taking place at Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh North Carolina over 24th – 27th July 2025, GalaxyCon Raleigh is a four-Day Festival of Fandom with celebrities, artists, writers, voice actors, cosplayers, entertainers, creators, wrestlers, fan groups, panelists.
