
The deadline for the next round of Ireland’s Arts Council’s English Language Literature Bursary Award is Thursday 13th February 2025 at 5.30 pm, the opportunity for an individual creator to receive a €20,000 Literature Bursary, open to writers, comic book artists and children’s picture book makers, working in either the Irish or English language.
In advance of the first Bursary deadline of 2025, the Arts Council’s Literature Team is giving two online information clinics soon, specifically for comic book creators, outlining the purpose and priorities of the award, how to make an application, and how applications are assessed.
The English-language clinic will be held on Wednesday, 29th January from 12.30 and the Irish-language clinic will be held on Thursday, 30th January from 12.30. Both sessions will be held on Zoom.
The presentations from the Literature Team should take about 30 minutes, and there will also be time for questions and answers.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
