Award-winning artist Aurel’s study of man’s relationship with apes and monkeys focus of upcoming exhibition

Monkeys: What kind of animals are we?” featuring drawings and illustrations by award-winning Spanish artist Aurel, is an exhibition opening soon at the Ville de Courbevoie, in France, as part of the festival du film Atmosphères.

The exhibition, (in French, “Singes – Quel genre d’animaux sommes-nous?”, which opens on Wednesday 21st September and runs until Tuesday 11th October, introduces us to Aurel’s eponymous work, published in French in 2021 by Futuropolis, through comic strip, drawings, illustrations, and original art.

After all the awards won for the animated film, Josep, his directorial debut, Aurel (Aurélien Froment) created the illustrated story inspired by the question: “Is man descended from the monkey?”

In order to provide answers, he interviewed the greatest primatologists (Frans de Waal, Sabrina Krief), a philosopher (Vinciane Despret) and artists (Patrick Bouchitey, the late Jean-Claude Carrière).

Through his work, Singes – Quel genre d’animaux sommes-nous?, he gives us the results of his investigations. It is clear that if we have a common ancestor, we have followed different branches of evolution…

Aurélien Froment is best known for his ‘Aurel’ newspaper illustrations and satirical cartoons in Le Monde, Marianne, Politis and Le Canard Enchainé. For his first feature film, Josep, he tackled the little-known period of the ‘Retirada’, examined through the life of another illustrator: Josep Bartoli, a Catalonian republican who sought refuge in France during the Spanish civil war.
